Part 1: Warm Up Game


Make groups and take a piece of paper. You have one minute to write verbs in present according to the
letter given. The group with the most correct verbs is the winner.

Part 2: Introduction to the Simple Past Tense


PAST SIMPLE + regular –ed

Use the past simple to talk about actions that are finished.

Regular past simple forms finish with –ed

I watched TV last night.


You cooked dinner yesterday.
He walked home.
She started work at 9 am.
It closed at four o’clock.
We looked at the photos
They stopped work at 5.30pm
The past simple is the same for all subject pronouns.

most verbs +ed work > worked

verbs ending e +d dance > danced

verbs ending consonant +y y > ied study > studied

one syllable verbs in one vowel + Double the consonant +ed stop > stopped

one consonant (except verbs ending w,x,y,z)

You will make a poster using the simple past tense. You have two
options.
1) Make a poster about your life so far. Include eight events that
have been very important to you. They could be births,

graduations, celebrations, trips, etc. Use both text and drawings, as well as both the
affirmative and negative structures of the simple past tense.
2) Make a poster about an amazing trip you’ve taken. The trip can be real or imaginary.
Include eight different things you did on the trip that were particularly exciting.
