Jorge Hernandez Letter of Intent

This document is a letter from a student requesting approval for a senior research project on how graphic novels have influenced animation. Specifically, the student will analyze literary elements like character development and story structure in graphic novels and how those concepts are applied in animated programs. The experiential component involves creating a graphic novel zine exploring these themes and sharing it online and with the school community. Research methods will include analyzing graphic novels like Maus, internet research, and interviews with graphic novel artists. The goal is to educate others on storytelling through the visual medium.

Dear Sir or Madam:

In my Research Paper, I will answer my question “How have graphic novels as a form of storytelling been
incorporated with literature and art been recognized and developed into the field of Animation??” I am
interested in the way graphic novels have gained popularity in the world and been produced into award winning
animated programs. Specifically, my research will focus on this combination of literature and art known as comic
books or Graphic novels. Analyzing important aspects in literature, such as the hero's journey (start, middle,
rising action, climax, falling action, conclusion). Along with the art componentes, such as the principles of
character design and world building. How these important concepts are applied to graphic novels will also be
factors explained in my research paper, all will also simultaneously parallel reflect my personal experience with
graphic novels and animation to give the paper a more personal approach.
The Experiential Project I have chosen is to create a zine that portrays a visual story. The art pieces in my zine
will be my best pieces I have created in my high career, Visual arts are a medium used to portray what happens
in our world in a creative way. Zine will then be posted to my Senior Project website and professional artist
Instagram to be available to the public. Along with printing various physical copies for people to read. My hope
is that the zinel will have a constructive impact on those who read it and serve as a fountain of inspiration to
continue forward. I will contact artists and educators who are in the graphic novel and animation industry, to be
my mentor(s).

This interdisciplinary project involves library research, including the graphic novel “Maus'' by Art Spiegelman
checking out Volumes 1 and 2 from Northgate Library. Along with internet research, on Student Resource
Gale, the history of graphic novels and comic books. Analysis of different character design principles, art
anatomy, study of graphic novel design, interviews with artists who are experienced in the fields of character
design and graphic novel creation. Learning how characters are important to plot, presenting to an
audience, and sharing my work on the senior project website and to the whole school on my public
professional artist Instagram account, in hopes of educating a community through the storytelling in my
graphic novel.

This will be challenging for me because I will have to create characters for my story, devise a plot for a graphic
novel (Includes a Moral at the end of the story), spend hours studying art character anatomy and study graphic
novels page layouts. I also plan to print out small copies of my novel and pass it out (if the pandemic permits). I
anticipate that the entire project will take 65-80 hours of work. Materials I will use to execute my project are
digital drawing programs (photoshop, clip studio paint), adobe indesign), along with physical research
materials/books all for the purpose of creating a narrative, and storytell to an audience.

I hope this meets with your approval.

Sincerely,

Jorge Hernandez
