1. What if software?
Software is a set of instructions, data or programs used to operate
computers and execute specific tasks. It is the opposite of hardware, which
describes the physical aspects of a computer. Software is a generic term
used to refer to applications, scripts and programs that run on a device.
2. Types of software
1. System software
(a) Operating system
It is a software that works as an interface between a user and the
computer hardware. The primary objective of an operating system is to
make computer system convenient to use and to utilize computer
hardware in an efficient manner. The operating system performs the
basic tasks such as receiving input from the keyboard, processing
instructions and sending output to the screen. Operating system is
software that is required in order to run application programs and
utilities. It works as a bridge to perform better interaction between
application programs and hardware of the computer
Examples:
UNIX
MS-DOS
MS-Windows – 98/XP/Vista
Windows-NT/2000
OS/2 and Mac OS
Examples:
.SYS FILES
WHQL
VIRTUAL DEVICE DRIVERS
(c) Firmware
In computing, firmware is a computer program that is "embedded" in a
hardware device and is an essential part of the hardware.[1] It is
sometimes called embedded software. An example is a
microcontroller, a part of the microprocessor that tells the
microprocessor what actions to take. It can also be a larger program
stored on flash memory, or uploaded onto existing hardware by a user.
Examples:
The BIOS found in IBM-compatible Personal Computers
Code inside a printer (in addition to the printer driver that is on the
computer)
Software controlling a heart defibrillator
Software controlling the lights in an office building
Software controlling electronics in a car — the radio, the ABS (anti-lock
braking system), engine controls, etc.
Software controlling newer household appliances (microwave ovens,
dishwashers, etc.)
(d) Utility
A Utility software is actually a kind of computer software which is
designed to help in management and tuning of computer hardware,
operating system and application software. It performs a single task or
a number of small tasks.
Examples:
Disk defragmenters
System Profilers
Virus scanners
Application launchers
network managers
Encryption utilities.
2. Application software
(a) Word processors
word processor is a software program capable of creating, storing, and
printing typed documents. Today, the word processor is one of the
most frequently used software programs on a computer, with Microsoft
Word being the most popular word processor.
Examples:
Microsoft Word
WordPerfect (Windows only)
AppleWorks (Mac only)
OpenOffice.org.
Examples:
Oracle,
FileMaker Pro
Microsoft Access
Microsoft SQL Server
SAP and MySQL
(c) Multimedia software
Multimedia refers to a combination of text, graphics, sound, animation
and video. Multimedia is an essential element in many of the other
software applications.
Examples:
VLC
MP layer
Mpv
Windows Media Player
GStreamer
Xine
(d) Web browsers
A web browser, or simply "browser," is an application used to access
and view websites. The primary function of a web browser is to render
HTML, the code used to design or "mark up" webpages. Each time a
browser loads a web page, it processes the HTML, which may include
text, links, and references to images and other items, such as
cascading style sheets and JavaScript functions. The browser
processes these items, then renders them in the browser window.
Examples:
Microsoft Internet Explorer
Google Chrome
Mozilla Firefox
Apple Safari.
3. Other classification of software
(a) Freeware
Freeware is software that is available for use at no monetary cost or for
an optional fee,[1] but usually (although not necessarily) closed source
with one or more restricted usage rights. Freeware is in contrast to
commercial software, which is typically sold for profit, but might be
distributed for a business or commercial purpose in the aim to expand
the market share of a "premium" product
Examples:
Adobe Reader
Free Studio
Skype
(b) Shareware
Shareware is copyrighted computer software that is developed and
made available to individual end users for free on a trial basis.
Shareware is software that we use for free for some days. After the
trial period, we are charged fees for further use of the software.
Examples:
Camtasia studio
MS Office
Internet download manager (IDM)
Bulk image downloader
Earth Time
Hot Alarm Clock
Adobe Photoshop
Adobe Dreamweaver
(c) Opensource
Open-source software (OSS) is any computer software that's
distributed with its source code available for modification. That means
it usually includes a license for programmers to change the software in
any way they choose: They can fix bugs, improve functions, or adapt
the software to suit their own needs.
Examples:
VLC
Mozilla Firefox
MySQL
Linux
Ubuntu
