HOMEWORK 1

1. Draw the Lewis dot structure for the following: BrF3, I3, PF5 (number of
electrons in the outer shell: Br = F = I = 7, P = 5)

2. Two copper samples with grain size (d) of 0.016 mm and 0.007 mm have the
yield stresses of 125 MPa and 175 MPa, respectively.
a) Determine the locking parameter (k) and frictional stress (σi) in the Hall-
Petch equation.
b) Calculate the yield strength of the brass when the average grain diameter
is 0.05 mm.
c) What must be the grain diameter if the yield strength in part (b) is to be
increased two-fold ?

3. Pure titanium has two allotropic forms: β-Ti (high temperature) and α-Ti (low
temperature). For equilibrium heating conditions, the low temperature α
phase transforms to the high temperature β phase at 883 °C (1156K),

a) Calculate the critical radius r* and the activation free energy ΔG* for a
body-centered cubic beta phase nucleus in a superheated alpha titanium
matrix at 1165 K. Assume a spherical nucleus (homogeneous
nucleation),
ΔGv(1165 K) = - 0.095 J/m3, and σsl = γ = 0.2 J/m2 .
b) Given your answer in part (a), explain why nucleation of the β phase is
unlikely to occur if you heat the titanium to 1165 K. What can you do to
make nucleation more likely to occur?

4. A silicon semiconductor is in the shape of a rectangular bar with a cross-
sectional area of 10 μm × 10 μm, a length of 0.1 cm, and is doped with Arsenic
at 5 × 1016 atoms/cm3 concentration. (T = 300 K).
a) determine the current if 5 V is applied across the length.
b) repeat part (a) if the length is reduced to 0.01 cm.
c) calculate the average drift velocity of electrons in parts (a) and (b).
(µn=1350 cm2/volt-s)
