Homework #9 – Assigned 11/21/2017 - Due 11/30/2017 at 4:00PM

Problem 1 – Chopra 10.8
(c and d) Plot the oscillation of the system in MATLAB. On the x axis indicate locations of
T1=2π/ω1

Problem 2 – Consider Problem 4 from the homework (shown again below). Use the same mass and
stiffness matrices as derived in the last homework. Assume M1 = ρAL/2; b = L/3; h = L/4. Assume L=0.5;
ρA=100, and EI =1
(a) Determine the natural frequencies and modes.
(b) Plot the mode shapes. Hint: each mode shape should define u(x) over the entire length of the pole.
(c) Assume the structure is loaded with a static horizontal point load of P=1 at x = L. The force is
suddenly released. Determine the free vibration response of the structure.
(d) Use MATLAB to plot the oscillation (variation in the degrees of freedom corresponding to each
shape function – i.e. u1 and u2). On the x axis indicate the locations of T1=2π/ω1
(e) Arbitrarily pick two time frames of oscillation. Plot the displaced shape of the system at those
points.

Problem 3- Chopra 10.12 (related to Figure P9.8)

i) Write the Equation of Motion for this structure in matrix form
ii) Use the technique shown in class to find the eigenfrequencies and modes.
iii) Plot the polynomial of det([D(λi)]) . Use a substitute λi which is in terms of ωi , m, EI, and h.
iv) Verify these results using MATLAB’s “eig” command.
v) Perform parts (b) and (c) from the problem description in the book.

Problem 4 – Chopra 10.16 (related to Figure P9.8)
