Short Circuit Rating of MV Bus Bar
Short Circuit Rating of MV Bus Bar
Short Circuit Rating of MV Bus Bar
Is this rating effected (or De-rated) with the service age (say 30 years ).
Any standard or reference document?
Thanks
i think it means that the bus bar can support a current of 50 kA during 1sec
This is just short circuit rating of the bus bar or the equiment. Equipment will
not be derated with respect to equipment life if you maintain equipment properly as
per manufacture instruction.

The short circuit rating is defined by the physical bracing structure of the
equipment. Short circuit currents cause the bus bars to deflect and the support
structure must hold the bus in place. Age of the equipment would have little
detrimental effect if the equipment is in a fixed environment. If the gear was
subject to unusual movement or vibration (such as on a boat or other non-stable
base) more attention to the structural aspects of the equipment would be advised.

Alan is correct in stating the SC rating is related to the physical bracing of the
bus bar support structure. The 50kA current creates tremendous mechanical forces
because of the magnetic fields which are developed. Remember the Right Hand Rule
for direction of current flow versus induced magnetic field. Maintaining the
mechanical integrity for 1 sec is simply a standard time period established by IEC
for the withstand time. IEC typically uses either 1 sec or 3 sec time intervals for
their ratings whereas ANSI standardizes on a 2 sec time period. Both address the
same issue but the Standard Unit of Testing is different base on these time
intervals. Equipment is subjected to destructive testing when a new design is being
certified for a particular rating after which time the manufacturers simply then
follow the same design pattern. These Standards are the basis for carrying out
these tests. Having experienced this type of testing at the UL Testing Laboratory
in the US equipment which is subjected to fault current greater than it is designed
for will literally come apart and then vaporize by the electrical arcs resulting
from bus bars being brought into contact with each other. Hope this adds some
additional clarification for you Muhammad.

50kA/1 second is the termal withstand current. Peak current give bigger mechanical
shock.

I think 50kA for 1 sec is symmetrical short circuit current capacity of your
busbar, of course asymmetrical short circuit rating gives more higher value.
it is one important point to know that life time of your busbar depends on how many
times of short circuit condition / fault condition happened, the load running that
connected with busbar and the maintenance.
