The Ending I Wanted to Be

Hello, Love, Goodbye: A Movie Review

Spearheaded by Director Cathy Garcia-Molina, ‘Hello, Love, Goodbye,’ as a

Filipino movie, turned out well in my eyes and for our fellow countrymen. Its storyline

was well-crafted and it was truly a movie with high quality animation and

cinematography. But the most impressing part for me was how the story went on the

end because it made the movie unique and distinct to others.

The story revolved mainly around two characters: Joy Fabregas, a nursing

graduate who became a domestic helper in Hong Kong to help her family on the

everyday expenses; and Ethan, a bartender who has romantic feelings for Joy.

Ethan, being also a playboy but has charming looks and charisma, courted Joy.

Despite of being resistive by his looks, Joy happened to found out that she also had

feelings for Ethan.

The two characters’ love story struggled to work out because of each lover’s

conflicts. Ethan must strive to escape from the mistake of his past love relationship.

Joy, as a breadwinner, took her responsibility of supporting her family and must work

hard to achieve it. And she had also her goal to achieve her own dream and must

not stuck to her life as a domestic helper.

To achieve her Joy’s goals in life, she had given an opportunity to work in

Canada for herself and her family. Knowing that there’s a relationship between the

two lovers, she can’t go easily and Ethan cannot go with her due to his issues with

the Embassy. So she must make the difficult choice: love or herself?
That’s why I’m impressed when she chose herself over love. Unlike the usual

ending of stories that concluded with happy-ever-after, this movie chose practicality

over fantasy. It is not a bad ending, but rather, it ends in a promising manner hoping

that their relationship may cross its paths again and be fixed at last.

This story also shows the importance of loving yourself. You must complete

the missing pieces of yourself before dealing with other priorities. In the movie, Joy

chose to work abroad instead of being with Ethan. She felt that her goals in life is the

missing piece of herself so that’s why she followed what her mind and heart speaks.

It may be selfish as it seems, especially in the case of Ethan who was abandoned by

his past lover and caused to ruin his own life, but later you will realize that before you

can truly care of others, you have to first take care of yourself. If Ethan truly loves

Joy, he will wait as according to a saying, “true love waits.” If the love is pure

between a man and a woman, no matter how long the distance and the time it takes,

it will find a way.

Moreover, the movie depicted the lives of the normal Filipino OFWs working in

Hong Kong: their activities while having their day-off, engaging and talking to other

Filipinos, and others. Thus, they are living in a normal, and practical life which has a

goal of supporting someone dear to them – a reason why the ending is in line with

the theme and environment of the story.

Just to put, this story cannot be executed well without the talented actors and

actresses who starred in the movie like Kathryn Bernardo as Joy, Alden Richards as

Ethan, and other supporting characters such as Maymay Entrata, Jorross Gamboa,

etc. Kathryn’s beauty and Alden’s handsome looks were exceptional, they portrayed
their respective characters very well, and the flow of the movie was well-crafted by

one of the best romance movie director, Cathy Garcia-Molina.

In accordance with the subject, Media and Information Literacy, if it were to

apply on what happened in the movie, I will say that the use of media is very

common and close of becoming a necessity to the Filipinos abroad, especially the

use of communication device to talk to their loved ones in the Philippines. It is very

helpful of making distant relationship close enough and somewhat forget the anxiety

of becoming an OFW and being far away from them. Also, information was accessed

easily through the use of radio. In the part of the movie were the character of

Maymay Entrata was missing, a message was sent through a radio and were heard

by other Hong Kong OFWs and that’s why she was able to find easily.

If it were to apply to the movie itself, it will now say that we should be

responsible of what we are watching. A movie must be watched for a person with

appropriate age. In the movie, there were scenes that are not suitable for kids below

the right age.

Overall, it was an excellent movie. ‘Hello, Love, Goodbye’ is not your typical

romance movie genre and it is something that everyone should be related especially

the OFWs who were working hard abroad. It has a very distinct and unique storyline

and it ended on what I want the story to end with leaving the happily-ever-after

stereotypes and happy ending fantasies.
