(The Murray River)

“No challenge poses a greater threat to future generations than climate change.” What if The
Murray River ceased to exist? Imagine millions of Australians both in urban and in rural areas
affected by the lack of water sources. How long will it take for us to understand that we’re
destroying our own water source?

The Murray River is located in South Australia. This river is known as the 2nd longest river in
Australia. It is 2,508 km and its width is 40–50 m. The latitude and longitude are shown on the
board. The Murray river starts off on the Western side of Australia’s highest mountain, forming a
border between New South Wales and Victoria, and makes its way into South Australia, as seen
on the map provided.

The Murray River is a significant water source, as it is the major domestic water supply for over
1.5 million homes. It provides essential water for irrigation, industries, domestic and recreational
use.

Ways the river is utilised in daily activity includes; producing one-third of Australia’s food source.
This is because the continent of Australia is surrounded by water making the river approachable
for people to use. Fishing...many Australians use this recreational activity for relaxation and the
enjoyment of being outdoors. Transport...as Australia is significantly large, the river can be used
for transportation from Victoria to South Australia.

The Murray River is facing a few critical issues such as; drought, flood and salinity. South
Australia and The Murray River have suffered multiple droughts throughout history. The
Millennium Drought broke in 2010 and the river is still dealing with the effects. This drought
caused untold damage to communities in South Australia causing it to be recorded in history.
Next, floods, The Murray River’s worst flood occurred in 1956 when water levels reached 12.3
m. Salinity… salinity occurs when there is too much salt in the water. Too much salt can affect
the quality of the soil as well as creating health problems for the plants and animals that rely on
the river. Over the years the amount of agricultural farming has dramatically increased. That
means the amount of water increases due to the demands of crop growth.

In conclusion, the water disruption will affect over 1.5 million homes in Australia. If the river
ceased to exist both the flora and fauna would be impacted. Thus The Murray River is a
significant water source towards locals, plants and animals

Thank you for listening to my speech.
