Communication is the process of sending and receiving information from one person to
another. Communication is important to me because it gives me some awareness on the things
that are happening around me. By simply communicating to other people, I can gain some
information’s that I haven’t heard of or didn’t know. Another reason why communication is
important to me is because it’s a big help for me to connect and build relationships towards other
people. By opening conversations to the people that I know and don’t know, it help’s me
understand their opinions and feelings towards a certain subject and also, this can help me share
my own thoughts and point of view. Communication skills are essential in being a good citizen
because this can help us understand people in any aspect whether business, technology, and even
in careers. It can allow others and yourself to understand information more accurately and
quickly.1
During a conversation, it is possible to experience communication breakdowns. The possible
problems that can occur during this situation are misinterpretation of information’s that the sender
is conveying to the receiver. This can happen if there are distractions around the place where the
conversation is happening. The common distractions when it comes to communication are the
noise and also the language barrier.
5. What does Berlin mean when he says, “(In teaching writing), we are teaching a way of
experiencing the world, a way of ordering and making sense of it”?
What Berlin is trying to say is that from what the environment gives or what we
encounter/experience in our daily lives, either positive or negative, we take it into heart, reflect
upon it and learn from it.2 We should be open minded, knowing the fact and consequences of
everything .
6. Is it only true for writing? Explain.

I think that it is much better to write something that you know. But, it is also not bad to search
for some references so that you can gain more information about a certain topic. 3 By looking for

COMMUNICATION ETHICS
1. What is Ethics?
Ethics in communication or ethical communication is the application of good principles of man

to the way he interacts to others. This is a type of communication that is predicated upon certain
business values, such as being truthful, concise, and responsible with one’s words and the
resulting actions.4
2. Why do you think there should be ethics in communication?
There should be ethics in communication for us to convey the right message to another people.
When emotions and culture are taken into consideration, the dignity and value of the receiver will
be uplifted. Sometimes, due to unethical communication the message to be delivered could be
misinterpreted.5
3. What problems can arise when people are not ethical in their communication practices?
There can be many problems that will emerge if people are not ethical in their communication.
When regular people do not use good manners when communicating, this can initially lead to
arguments or misunderstanding. Without putting ethics on communication practices, you can
offend other people without realizing it , and the result of this can affect you. The people around
you may change their own perspective towards you, because of your lack of ethical on the way you
communicate.6
4. Why does unethical communication threaten the quality of all communication, and consequently
the well-being of individuals and the society in which we live?
Unethical communication threaten the quality of all communication, well-being of individuals,

and also on the society that we live in is because once the communication isn’t done properly,
many misunderstandings will immediately appear. Instead of solving the problems or the conflicts
that are happening, unethical communication can worsen the situation. Today, this happens very
often. Fake news can easily spread and people tend to believe in it immediately. And this can
result to people giving their opinions that are not right just because of the misunderstanding that
happened.

ETHICAL COMMUNICATION
1. Why is it important to be ethical in communicating today?
It is important to be ethical in communicating today because most of the people are not being
aware if the things that they are saying are still right and ends up hurting other people. Being
ethical in communicating shows that you’re a decent and trustworthy person. Once you show
respect to other people, they will also do the same thing to you.
2. Is honesty still a virtue valued today? Why or why not?
Yes, honesty is still a virtue that is valued today. Honesty leads you to success and can even
define who you are. Every people want’s to be with a person that is trustworthy, and a person to
whom they can lean on. We often neglect the importance of such quality as we have to go along
with the crowd and in that process, we become tainted by greed and corruption. But, some people
are still very honest today and that makes them really admirable and respectable. If a person is
honest, he/she is loved and respected by all.
3. When you think of politicians today, would you say that they have been communicating in an
ethical manner?
From what I had observed, I think that the politicians today are not communicating in an
ethical matter. For example, the president. He can be angry sometimes and say some foul words
but we can’t help it because that’s the way our president is. In front of the people and the camera,
he would sometimes curse and say some words that are not appropriate. This might be because of
anger but still, there should be manners in communicating especially for a president of a country.
4. Who comes to mind on the subject of violating the ethics of communication?
The people that comes to my mind regarding the subject of violating the ethics of
communication are the people who are involved in politics. We all know that some of the politicians
are actually liars and thieves, and yet some still listen to the lies that they are telling and some
even worship them.
5. Why do people communicate in an unethical manner?
People communicate in an unethical manner because it helps them get what they want. They
might also believe that this is the easiest, the fastest or even the only way to get what they want.
6. What consequences can you think of because of that?

The consequences that could happen to a person because of his unethical manner are losing
their trust to someone especially when it comes to our job, we could end up hurting ourselves and
also other people that we know.

2. Based on McCrum’s essay and some additional research on your part, why is the rise of English
such a remarkble “success”? what led to English taking on the role of a global language?
It was due mainly to enslavement, colonialism, exploitation, cultural and historical

destruction. The lasting impact of Britain creating the world’s biggest global empire was in many
cases the eradication of local languages with English being the language of goodliness and power.
This happened in the Caribbean and the US where enslaved Africans were forbidden from speaking
their own languages. For the rest of the US and Australia the indigenous populations were
decimated subjected to near genocide as a result of British colonisation. Now English begins to
rule. In Asia the British conquered almost everywhere and although local languages remained
intact English was firmly established as the language of the elite so much so that it became the de
facto second language for probably over a billion people. As the US and the UK became richer, the
result of all that ‘free’ labour their power and influence spread and it made sense for their trading
partners to be able to speak English too. By the time of the early 20th century, mass media kicked,
starting with the introduction of cinema and TV and now the internet all up until recently the
excluusive domain of the Anglophone world. In. this way the influence continues its spread, for
now.
3. David Crystal (2003) says that “a language achieves a genuinely global status when it develops
a special role that is recognized in every country. What is the special role of English in the
Philippines?
The Philippines is recognized globally as one of the largest English-speaking nations with
majority of its population having at least some degree of fluency in the language. English has
always been one of the official languages of the Philippines and is spoken by more than 14 million
Filipinos. It is the language of commerce and law, as well as the primary medium of instruction in
education. For most Filipinos, studying English in the Philippines, they do so for career
opportunities and job growth.
4. Why does McCrum say that “we should not talk of English but of many Englishes?
Because the English language usage spans across multiple nations. We have the British
English, American English, Australian English and New Zealand English. Most of the people thought
that English is the only English that the other country uses. But if we will look at it, there are more
of it that we don’t know.
