ABSTRACT

Development of the LAS shall be based on the Most Essential Learning

Competencies (MELC) issued by the Central Office. As an evaluation instrument,

worksheets can be utilized by instructors to comprehend understudies' past

information, result of learning, and the way toward learning. Simultaneously, they

can be utilized to empower understudies to screen the advancement of their own

learning. But it is still not yet proven which is the main reason for conducting the

study.

Three types of instruments will be used to collect data. In the first step, an

academic interest survey will be filled by both groups of students to gather

information about what motivates students to learn. The next step, students will

be assessed by pre-test and post-test and for testing two achievement tests,

consisting of multiple type questions were developed. Expert opinion was taken

for the validity of the test. Effectiveness test will be done to know the

effectiveness of student worksheet in increasing student activity and result of

learning.

CHAPTER I

THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

Introduction

“One of the most important aspects of technology in education is its ability

to level the field of opportunity for students.”

-John King, U.S. Secretary of Education

The 1987 Constitution provides in Article XIV, Section 1 that the “State

shall protect and promote the right of all citizens to quality education at all levels,

and shall take appropriate steps to make such education accessible to all.” This

right must be upheld at all times, and DepEd is duty-bound to provide learning

opportunities even in the time of the COVID-19 national emergency. Under

Republic Act (RA) No. 9155 or the

Governance of Basic Education Act of 2001, DepEd is “vested with

authority, accountability and responsibility for ensuring access to, promoting

equity in, and improving the quality of basic education.”

Relative to the implementation of new normal for the School Year 2020-

2021, the Department of Education Region 02 through the Curriculum and

Learning Management Division (CLMD) adopts the following guidelines in the

preparation of Learning Activity Sheets (LAS) waiting for the issuance of the

complete Alternative Delivery Modules (ADMs). The LAS shall be utilized by

learners during the home learning sessions (Cagayan Valley Regional

Memorandum No. 042, s2020). In the same way, it is also adapted by other

regions in the country.

Development of the LAS shall be based on the Most Essential Learning

Competencies (MELC) issued by the Central Office. Key stage 1 (Grades 1-3)

learning areas shall be prepared by their own respective SDOs based on their

MTB used as Methods of Teaching (MOT). Preparation of the Key Stage 2

(Grades 4-6), and Key Stage 3 (Junior HS) and Key Stage 4 (Senior HS) shall be

based on the agreed distribution per grade levels. Though LAS is new and not

completely understood, the teachers simultaneously continue training in

preparation for the new normal. Collaborative learning is foreseen to be critical in

the new normal.

The exercises are coordinated around a few perceived structure squares

of confidence: personality, having a place, reason and fitness. To influence

personality issues, exercises are intended to zero in on figuring out how to such

as oneself, distinguishing one's novel capacities, recognizing one's inclinations,

communicating imagination, and figuring out how to utilize positive self-talk.

Exercises dedicated to the having a place part of confidence center around

fellowship, relational correspondence, perceiving uniqueness and positive

characteristics in others, and building a genealogy and recognizing one's

underlying foundations (Palomares, 1991).

Nonetheless, students have shifted levels of legitimacy and

comprehension. So less commendable understudies probably won't plan for an

undertaking as others. This may prompt disappointment of destinations of the

entire interaction.

As an evaluation instrument, worksheets can be utilized by instructors to

comprehend understudies' past information, result of learning, and the way

toward learning. Simultaneously, they can be utilized to empower understudies to

screen the advancement of their own learning.

A few examinations have proposed different systems like the

Technological, Pedagogical, and Content Knowledge (TPACK) the exercise plan,

assessment sheets, and model-based e-learning were legitimate, down to earth

and compelling in expanding oneself directed learning of understudies.

Additionally, the legitimacy of the item was estimated utilizing a specialist

approval sheet, the common sense of the item was estimated utilizing an

instructor and understudy reaction poll, and the adequacy of the item was

estimated utilizing an understudy learning freedom survey. Similarly, this training

may likewise be applied to the ebb and flow exploration of recognizing viability of

learning movement sheets.

With the assistance of a powerful worksheet, understudies can figure out

how to certainly issue addresses freely. By and by, perhaps the best strength as

an understudy is having the option to perceive and adjust to a teacher's showing

style, which normally happens through the material the person distributes during

class.

There are learning activities required for the 21st century workforce such

as adaptability, complex communication skills, non-routine problem solving, self-

management, and systems-thinking are essential skills in the 21st-century

workforce.

Thus, different ways of applying the intellectual property law will be crucial

in ensuring that their creation, reproduction, distribution, and utilization will be in

accordance with law, including but not limited to RA 8293, otherwise known as

the Intellectual Property Code of the Philippines, as amended by RA 10372.

Budget of Work (BOW) is a resource material for teaching multi-grade

classes that contains K to 12 basic education curriculum competencies, skills,

and objectives; topics for specific skills and competencies; and teaching

strategies, activities, and time allotment arranged into columns for easy reference

and notation. It will serve as a teacher's reference in preparing daily and/or

weekly lesson plans.

Background of the Study

Republic of the Philippines
Laguna State Polytechnic University
Province of Laguna
COLLEGE OF TEACHER EDUCATION
GRADUATE STUDIES AND APPLIED RESEARCH

As a teacher in the new normal, the implementation of basic education

has been very crucial. It underwent a lot of questions on how it will be possible to

deliver basic education in the best possible way. As for the implementing rules

and regulations of the school’s learning continuity plan, the researcher became

curious on how modular learning will be possible through the use of Learning

Activity Sheets (LAS).

The adoption of the basic education Learning Continuity Plan for School

Year 2020-2021 in Light of the Covid-19 Public Health Emergency. As part of the

mechanism for readiness for school opening last August 24, 2020, a Learning

Resource and Platform Committee was hereby created to ensure that

appropriate learning resources of good quality are made available, and that the

necessary platforms or technologies (printed, digital online, offline, television and

radio) are engaged and made available in a timely efficient manner (DepEd

Order No. 012, s, 2020).

More importantly, BE-LCP also emphasizes that learning opportunities to

our students may be provided through blended distance learning modalities, until

any prohibitions by the DOH, the IATF, or the president for face-to-face learning

in schools/CLCs is lifted or relaxed. The order immediately took effect upon

publication. Learning opportunities shall be made available. field implementers

are encouraged to contextualize the MELCs in order to accommodate the varying

contexts of learners, teachers, learning environment, and support structures

considering both the content and performance standards.

Modular Distance Learning involves individualized instruction that allows

learners to use SLMs in print or digital format, whichever is applicable in the

context of the learner, and other learning resources like learner’s materials,

textbooks, activity sheets, study guides, and other study materials. Learners

access electronic copies of learning materials on a personal computer (PC),

tablet PC, or smartphone. CDs, DVDs, USB storage, and computer-based

applications can all be used to deliver e-learning materials, including offline

ebooks.

The teacher takes the responsibility of monitoring the progress of the

learners. The learners may ask assistance from the teacher via email, telephone,

text message/instant messaging, etc. Where possible, the teacher shall do home

visits to learners needing remediation or assistance. Any member of the family or

other stakeholders in the community need to serve as para-teachers. The

challenge will be in dealing with learners not capable of independent learning.

This is the subject of further discussion within DepEd, and with partners and

parents.

Theoretical Framework

Instructional written materials play important roles as teachers’ agents in

effective teaching practices (Lee, 2014). Quite possibly the most every now and

again utilized materials are worksheets. The examination intends to investigate

the connections between worksheet use and scholarly accomplishment. It will be

analyzed using TIMSS and PIRLS information and numerous relapse

investigations. Concerning the premises of the study, there are two

measurements. It has five kinds of connections among science accomplishment,

worksheet use, and other related factors. It will be the premise in strategy in this

exploratory investigation.

Activity Based Learning (ABL), which is defined as a learning process in

which students are constantly engaged (Panko et al., 2007 as cited in Anwer,

2019). Action based learning is the gauge for innovative and basic reasoning

abilities improvement. Notwithstanding, this strategy won't work as expected if

understudies are not spurred enough to accomplish their genuine potential. The

most valuable and compelling technique to instruct ideas that are mind boggling

in nature is by including understudies in intelligent exercises, which is likewise

the foundation of ABL. By using various exercises in the homeroom, basic

reasoning abilities and imaginative abilities of the understudies are likewise

improved.

An experimental study design will be utilized in this study consisted of an

experimental group and a controlled group. The experimental group received

treatment, while the control group received no treatment. Random assignment for

selection of subjects was considered and pre-test and post-test control group

design of experimental research was used for this study (Fraenkel & Wallen,

2012).

COLLEGE OF TEACHER EDUCATION
GRADUATE STUDIES AND APPLIED RESEARCH

The purpose of this study is to explore the association between worksheet

usage and achievement in grade eight (8) students in Sampaloc National High

School. To gain an overview of the association, the questions that arises are:

1. What is the academic interest of grade 8 students?

2. What is the effect of LAS on students’ academic achievement to the

students in education of grade eight (8) students?

3. Is there a significant difference on the effect of LAS in teaching

technique on students’ achievement according to the two groups of

respondents?

Hypothesis

There is no significant improvement on the academic performance of

Grade 8 students using Learning Activity Sheets as a learning tool.

Significance of the Study

The study focused on the effectiveness of learning activity sheets in

teaching araling panlipunan to grade eight (8) students. The result of the study

will be beneficial to the several stakeholders. Among the persons who were

directly or indirectly benefited the following:

10
Republic of the Philippines
Laguna State Polytechnic University
Province of Laguna
COLLEGE OF TEACHER EDUCATION
GRADUATE STUDIES AND APPLIED RESEARCH

This study will help determine the advantages and disadvantages of using

learning activity sheets to grade eight (8) students. Thus, it will identify other

notable factors in using LAS as in teaching Araling Panlipunan.

Additionally, to help in assessing weaknesses of students. It will help the

AP teacher in establishing the proper intervention on some difficulties

encountered by the students.

Improve effective teaching strategies through evaluating the whole

process of giving instruction. It will help the principal evaluate the methodologies

adopted by the school in terms of implementing modalities.

Enhance personal and professional traits of faculty by means of LAC

session. The result of the study can be echoed in a learning action cell to inform

the faculty about the findings of the study.

Lastly, this would also be beneficial to the future researcher who wishes

to pursue along this line if ever there will be an existing problem that will occur. In

case of a specific situation that is comparable to the overall study.

Scope and Limitation

This study is limited to the analysis of the relationship between the usage

of Learning Activity Sheets and academic performance of grade eight (8)

students. The content basically focuses on the two variables. A correlation is the

measurement of the relationship between two variables. In both types of

11
Republic of the Philippines

Province of Laguna
COLLEGE OF TEACHER EDUCATION
GRADUATE STUDIES AND APPLIED RESEARCH

correlation, there is no evidence or proof that changes in one variable cause

changes in the other variable. A correlation simply indicates that there is a

relationship between the two variables (Cherry, 2020).

To identify effectiveness, there must be a comparison between the

controlled and uncontrolled group. In this case, the uncontrolled will be the not

using LAS in teaching Araling Panlipunan. On the other hand, the controlled

group is using LAS in teaching Araling Panlipunan. It can be measured using

pre-test and post-test.

The effectiveness will be analyzed using the agents in effective teaching

practices (Lee, 2014).

Definition of Term
The following are the definition of terms in the title, the statement of the

problem and other variables found in the study.

Activity Based Learning (ABL). Activity Based Learning (ABL),

which is defined as a learning process in which students are constantly

engaged (Panko et al., 2007 as cited in Anwer, 2019)

Araling Panlipunan. Araling Panlipunan (Makabayan, Social

Studies) is the learning area that lays most stress on the development of

social awareness, empathy and firm commitment to our common goal as a

nation. It entails the use of integrated units, which enable the individual to

personally process, assimilate and systematically practice a wide range of

values and life skills including work ethic.

Effectiveness. A measure of the extent to which a specific

intervention, procedure, regimen, or service, when deployed in the field in

routine circumstances, does what it is intended to do for a specified

population.

Learning Activity Sheets. Learning Activity Sheets (LAS) shall be

based on the Most Essential Learning Competencies (MELC) issued by

the Central Office.

Modular Distance Learning. Modular Distance Learning involves

individualized instruction that allows learners to use SLMs in print or digital

format, whichever is applicable in the context of the learner, and other

learning resources like learner’s materials, textbooks, activity sheets,

study guides, and other study materials.

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE AND STUDIES

Related Literature

A learner may adopt either Digital Modular Distance Iearning

(DMDL) or Printed Modular Distance learning (PMDL). Learners with

devices at home like laptop, desktop, or tablet, may adopt DMDL. The

SLMs in different digital formats such as flat PDF, education videos, audio

lessons, e-SLMs and others may be stored in a CD/DVD USB flash

drive/pen drive while the printed SLM shall be used by learners adopting

PMDL. Additional, Self-Learning Modules (SLMs) which are K to 12

compliant are developed following the ADM Learning Resources

Standards. The SLMs are designed to provide ample time for mastery and

sufficient practice to ensure that the targeted most essential learning

competencies are achieved. Clearly defined goals are attainable within the

specific time frame by taking into consideration the learners' learning

capacity based on their grade level (Division Memorandum No. 201, s.

2020). This is relevant to the study in terms of using the LAS which have

implementing guidelines. The LAS that will be used in the study must

follow the implementing rules and regulations set by respected SDO’s.

14
Republic of the Philippines
Laguna State Polytechnic University
Province of Laguna
COLLEGE OF TEACHER EDUCATION
GRADUATE STUDIES AND APPLIED RESEARCH

As an assessment tool, worksheets can be used by teachers to

understand students' previous knowledge, outcome of learning, and the

process of learning; at the same time, they can be used to enable

students to monitor the progress of their own learning (Lee, 2014). It is

also cited on the significance of the present study that teachers will be

able to understand their student mor comprehensively.

Amila et al. (2018) found that student worksheet based on Ethno

science was practically using in learning and effective in improving

conceptual understanding which is indicated by the differences in test

results between the control and the experimental class. The present study

may show same result as mention in the said study. It can help improve

conceptual understanding on content.

CTL-based Student Worksheets are easier for students to

understand learning material, this is shown by students in solving

problems on student worksheets properly. Based on the results of the

study it can be concluded that learning by using Student Worksheets

based on Contextual Teaching and Learning helps students more easily

understand the subject matter (Fauziah and Nurita, 2019). In relation to

15
Republic of the Philippines

Province of Laguna
COLLEGE OF TEACHER EDUCATION
GRADUATE STUDIES AND APPLIED RESEARCH

the present study, it can also be observed during the conduct of the study

since LAS are organised based from MELS. Thus, Department of

Education uses thematic strategy which is an effective way of presenting

content.

Simbolon et al. (2018) found that students’ activity sheets with a

scientific approach developed by researchers deserve to be used as a

teaching material to support the fourth grade of primary school. However,

the study used it on primary school level. In spite of using different grade

levels, it can be comparable to the present study in terms of using

scientific approach during the structuring of Learning Activity sheets.

To sum it up, the literature presented can be comparable to the

present study in terms of the materials used, approach and methodology.

Additionally, results of the said study can be comparable to the present

study; it can be evident when it is cited on the analysis of the results of the

present study.

Related Studies

Andayani et al. (2021) found that inquiry-based student worksheets

on animal tissue learning material can train students' critical thinking skills.

It is relevant to the study in terms of the usage of worksheets which

16
Republic of the Philippines
Laguna State Polytechnic University
Province of Laguna
COLLEGE OF TEACHER EDUCATION
GRADUATE STUDIES AND APPLIED RESEARCH

improves the critical thinking of learners. In this case, it shows

effectiveness because it trains the thinking of the respondents.

Relatively, the activity and creative thinking skills of students

increased after learning, so it can be concluded that guided inquiry

learning tools were effective in increasing students' activities and creative

thinking skills (Sarnita et al. (2021). Similarly, it is also the same with the

above study because it trains critical thinking of respondents.

The use of worksheets is an effective method in teaching the shape

and movement of the Earth. In their study, Utami et al., (2016) similarly

concluded that using worksheets on the subject of the distribution of

natural resources markedly increases student achievement. Similarly, it is

relevant to the study in terms of the effectiveness of using activity sheets

in teaching Araling panlipunan that involves also the same topic shape

and movement of the Earth.

Thus, the implementation of project based learning (PjBL)-based

student's worksheets can improve student's higher-order thinking skills

and time management skills (Santoso, 2021). It is relevant to the previous

studies above in terms of the effectiveness of worksheet. In this case, it

improves Higher Order Thinking Skills.

To sum it up, most of the studies point out the effectiveness of

using worksheets to improve critical thinking and higher order thinking

skills. Moreover, most of the studies reviewed positive feedback on the

use of worksheets in self-regulated learning

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

This chapter starts with an introductory paragraph citing the different parts
or contents of the chapter.

Research Design

This study will employ exploratory correlation between using learning

activity sheets in teaching Araling Panlipunan. There will be a needs assessment before

the conduct of pre-test and post-test to the controlled and uncontrolled group. The study

made use of quantitative research methods in analyzing the controlled and uncontrolled

group. It is the most appropriate method to be used to identify the effectiveness of using

LAS in teaching Araling Panlipunan.

Respondents of the Study

The study will be conducted in Sampaloc National High School in Sampaloc

Quezon. The respondent of the study will be grade eight (8) students of Samaploc

National High School. They are composed of two sections Grade 8 -Sampaguita and

Grade 8 - Rose. Grade 8 sampaguita is composed of 12 male and 11 females with a

total of 23 students. Grade 8 Rose is composed of 11 male and 11 female with a total of

22 students. All in all, the grade 8 is composed of forty-five (45) students. This will be

conducted in the third quarter school year 2020-2021.

Research Procedure

This research utilized a descriptive-correlational design by Camorin (2010) in the

gathering of important data relevant to the study. It is a design used to collect and

analyze data and measure two variables of the study the: instructional strategies

employed by the teachers in teaching AP and the academic performance of grade 8

students. It will make use of the pre-test and post-test. The extent of instructional

strategies utilized by teachers in teaching AP in terms of effectivity of learning activity

sheets. And the proficiency level of learners’ academic performance.

Research Instrument

The researcher will use an assessment skills tool as a data gathering instrument.

It will involve collection of data in order to test the hypothesis to answer questions

concerning the level of improvement on the academic performance of grade 8 Students

using the Learning Activity Sheets as a learning tool.

Statistical Treatment of Data

The study used descriptive-correlational research design which primarily

employed the survey method to obtain information from the students of the whole

population. A one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) will be used because the study has

categorical independent variable and a dependent variable. This will test the difference

in the means of dependent and independent variable.
