SYSTEMATIC APPROACH TO TEACHING

THE CONE OF EXPERIENCES
Take-off/ Motivation

1.

Guide Question. Study the chart on systematized

instruction. Pay close attention to the parts. Write at least 4 statements on the figure.

 The concept of instructional goals that take into account the students' needs, expectations, and
preparation is the first step in teaching.
 The required learning environments, materials, supplies, and services will be chosen based on
the teaching approach chosen.
 The instructor chooses the best instructional techniques to use based on the goals.
 The use of instructional materials, equipment, and facilities necessitates the assignment of
personnel to assist the teacher.

2.
Guide Questions Study the Cone of Experience given above. Analyze how the elements are arranged
from the bottom up or from top down.

 According to Dale, the arrangement in the cone is based on abstraction and on the
quantity of senses involved. The experiences in each stage can be mixed and are
interrelated that brings up more meaningful learning.  The cone of experience is also
arranged from (more complex) activities that require the use of all the senses to the
activities that require the least use of the senses.

2. Define Harvard psychologist, Jerome S. Bruner, presents a three-tiered model of

learning where he points out that every area of knowledge can be presented and
learned in three distinct steps. Study his model of learning given below.
It is highly recommended that a learner proceeds from the ENACTIVE to the ICONIC and
only after to the SYMBOLIC. The mind is often shocked into immediate abstraction at the
highest level without the benefit of gradual unfolding.
Questions: Are the implications of the Cone of Experience in the teaching-learning process
the same things that are recommended by Bruner’s three-tiered model of learning?

 Dale's cone of Experience offers teaching and learning frameworks that help teachers
consider how to improve learner retention by engaging the learner. This suggests that
when the learner expresses themselves and participates in the learning process, the
sensory organs are stimulated. As a result, Edgar Dale's cone of knowledge is the
same as Bruner's model. The only difference is that Edgar Dale used it in a more
comprehensive presentation.

3. Which learning aids in Edgar Dale’s Cone of Experience correspond/s to each tier or
level in Bruner’s model? Write your answers on the spaces provided.

 ENACTIVE: it refers to direct or real encounters or interactions of what is. This is life
in its purest, richest, and most unedited form. They serve as the foundation for all
other learning activities.

Test Your Understanding of a System’s Approach

Put a () before the item that characterizes a systems approach to instruction and an ( )
before the item that does NOT characterize a systems approach.
_________1. The function of one part can be performed by another part of the system.
_________2. One element can be substituted by another element in the system
_________3. There is interaction among parts of the system
_________4. Elements are independent of each other
_________5. There is interdependence of elements
_________6. The phases of instruction are viewed in isolation
Explanation:
When Dale formulated the Cone of Experiences, computers were not yet a part educational or
home settings so they are not part of the original Cone. The computer technology actively
engages the learner, who uses seeing, hearing and physical activity at the keyboard as well as
range of mental skills. Where will the computer be on the Cone?

Self-reflect

Review the diagram on Outcomes-Based Teaching-Learning below. Are the elements the
same with a system’s approach to instruction?
