2. Operational Principles
The MPC Series employs Tanaka Scientific's unique air pressure system (certified as U.S. standard
ASTM D 6749) to detect pour points (solidification points). Air pressure is applied to the surface of a
specimen, with subsequent motion of the sample surface measured to detect sample flow.
[System Outline]
The specimen chamber and specimen surface are divided into inner and outer regions by the pressure
conducting tube. Air pressure is applied to the specimen by a pressurizing syringe connected to the
outer region, creating a pressure differential between the inner and outer surfaces of the sample. Two
outcomes are then possible.

3. Installation
The instrument is divided into two sections, a test unit and a control unit, with the test unit designed
to sit on top of the control section. However, the units may be separated to allow, for example, the
test unit to be located in a draft chamber (1).
When stacking the measuring and control units, the dripping tray (standard accessory, MPC-102L
only) should be installed between the units. The drip tray protects the control unit and electrical
connections from any water leaking from the test unit or any hose connections.
Ensure that the drip tray is installed in the correct orientation. The side of the tray with no wall
should be located at the rear of the unit. The four protrusions on the bottom of the test unit align
with the four indentations in the top surface of the control unit (see Fig. 3).
Note (1): When operating the units in separate locations, the optional 3-m connection cable
should be used instead of the standard accessory connection cable (0.6 m).

3.2. Connection of the Coolant Circulation Device (MPC-102L Only)
Connect the coolant inlet on the back of the test unit to the pump discharge port of the coolant
circulation device and the coolant outlet to the coolant return side of the coolant circulation device
using the standard accessory coolant circulation hose (with insulation pipe). Secure each connection
port with a hose belt.

in electric shock, damage to the instrument, cords
and/or cables, and/or fire due to overheating.
(1) Two cables are used to connect the control unit to the test unit (standard 0.6 m or optional 3 m), a
power cable (AC line) and a signal cable (signal line). The sockets for these cables are located on
the rear panels of both units.
(2) Insert the power cable and secure by fastening the lock nut. Insert the signal cable and secure
using the clips on the sides of the plugs. Connect the power cord to the back of the control unit
and to a specified voltage AC outlet rated at 1.5 KVA or more. (2)
The maximum power consumption of this instrument is 0.5 kW. When sharing an outlet with other
electric appliances, ensure that the total power consumption does not exceed the outlet capacity.
Note (2): The standard power cord comes with a three-prong plug. If the plug does not fit your
outlet, you will need to change the plug.
If the outlet is not equipped with a ground terminal, connect the cord to the outlet via the ground
adapter (triangular add-on), ensuring that the instrument is grounded using a ground cord
extension.

(1) The specimen cup and pressure conducting tube should be removed from the detector, cleaned
with an appropriate solvent and dried prior to use. Wipe any oil from the temperature and cloud
point sensors with a tissue or a waste cloth.
(2) With the metallic tip facing away from the detector assembly, insert the pressure conducting tube
into the hole in the detector around the temperature sensor (see Fig. 7)
(3) Fill the specimen cup with specimen up to the reference mark and insert into the bath.
(4) Insert the detector assembly into the bath vertically, taking care not to knock the cloud point
sensor or pressure conducting tube against the specimen cup. The detector assembly should
then be screwed securely into place. Be careful not to twist the wires between the detector and
main unit.
(5) Finally, fix the insulation pad in place to prevent problems arising from condensation during
testing
- 16 -
5.4. Test Mode Selection
The instrument contains 25 preset test modes, which are combinations of test type, pressure and
detection interval (see Fig. 8).
Selecting the correct mode can be time consuming, and so the test modes that are available to
users can be customized (refer to the attached Maintenance Manual for more information).
The MODE key is used to select from the available test modes. While holding the MODE key down,
press either the left arrow or right arrow keys to cycle backwards or forwards through the available
modes.

5.5. Setting the Expected Pour/Cloud Point
In this instrument, the entry of an Expected pour/cloud point is essential. Be sure to enter an
appropriate value prior to each test. For PP/CP and PP tests, the estimate refers to the pour point,
while in CP tests, the estimate refers to the cloud point.
The Expected cloud/pour point display field in the upper right of the main screen (see Fig. 5 on page
14) consists of five individual fields for input purposes, the sign, a 2-digit integer, the decimal point,
and a single decimal place. Move the cursor (displayed as an underscore) using the left or right arrow
keys and increment or decrement the value of the selected digit using the up and down arrow keys
(the sign field alternates between blank for positive and - for negative).
The maximum value that can be set is 51.0.
When CP test with 1.0°C interval is chosen, the value of the decimal place is ignored, with only the
integer value being of significance. To avoid any confusion, it is suggested that an integral value is
entered in these situations.
If nothing at all is known about the pour or cloud points, it is better to choose a low value. Although
this will result in long measurement times, the results will be accurate.

the display cycles with each press of the FUNCTION key is:
Main Display Screen → Details Screen → Sample Name Input Screen → Main Display Screen
When specimen name input is disabled, the Sample Name Input Screen cannot be accessed by pressing
the FUNCTION key.
Be sure to enter the specimen name prior to testing. The cursor can be moved with the left and right
arrow keys, and individual characters changed using the up and down arrow keys.

6. Test Procedure
Press the START key (3). The RUN lamp will come on, the Expected pour/cloud point is displayed in
the specimen temperature field for three seconds, and testing begins (4).
Note (3):The START key is disabled while the Details Screen or Sample Name Input Screen are
being displayed. Use the FUNCTION key to cycle through to the main screen before
pressing the START key.
Note (4):Once testing has begun, test mode, preheating, and Expected pour/cloud point settings
cannot be changed. To change settings, press the RESET key to abort the current test.
From this point, testing proceeds automatically. An explanation of the automatic testing procedure follows.
※ This process is skipped if preheating is not selected (" " displayed in the preheating display field).
During preheating, both the RUN and WARM lamps will light up and bath heating begins (5).
When the bath has reached the temperature set out below, the WARM lamp extinguishes and
bath cooling begins (5).
- 20 -
Note (5):The level of cooling/heating is indicated by a red LED at the upper right of the test unit.
The led is continuously lit to indicate full output (100%), extinguished to indicate no output
(0%), and flashes to indicate any intermediate output levels. As the output level is nearly
always changing, the led is almost always flashing. If the lamp remains dark for an
extended period of time, the thermo-module connections may be faulty.
※ This step is only applicable to cloud point testing modes (“CP” or “PP/CP” displayed in the test
mode field).
Immediately upon starting the test, the intensity of light incident upon the cloud point sensor is
measured and displayed in the EXP.PP field. This is done during the three seconds that the
Expected pour/cloud point is displayed in the current specimen temperature field.
After three seconds, the current specimen temperature and EXP.PP fields return to normal (6),
with the bath temperature field displaying the following information depending on test mode:
Test mode PP/CP ⇒ The cloud point temperature sensor temperature is displayed (
Fig. 10 ).
Test mode PP or CP ⇒ The field is blank.
Note (6): During testing operations, the value displayed in the EXP.PP field can be toggled between
Expected pour point and current cloud point sensor temperature by pressing either the up
or down arrow key.
If the intensity of light measured by the cloud point sensor is not in the range of 10% to 90%, the
cloud point cannot be tested and the following error messages are displayed:
Test mode PP/CP ⇒ TRBL is displayed in the cloud point temperature field, but pour point testing
continues (see Fig. 11 on page 22).
Test mode CP ⇒ The test ends, and the error message shown in Fig. 12 on page 22 is
displayed.
- 21 -
The intensity of light measured will not fall within the specified range if the sensor is faulty, the
detector is incorrectly set, or there is a problem with the specimen. If the error message continues
despite the sensor functioning correctly and being correctly setup, the specimen itself is the
problem, and cannot be tested using this instrument.
TROUBLE No.01
PHOTO SYSTEM
※ This step is only applicable to pour point testing modes (“PP” or “PP/CP” displayed in the test
mode field).
The pour point sensor is checked for air leaks immediately after preheating, if preheating is
enabled, or three seconds after test start otherwise.
If any leaks are found, the test is aborted and the error message shown in Fig. 13 is displayed.

6.2.4. Cooling
The bath is cooled at preset rates, with different rates used above and below the switching
temperature of 40°C (7) above the Expected pour point. The product is shipped to cool at a rate of
4°C/min (7) until the switching temperature is reached and at a rate of 1°C/min (7) thereafter.
Note (7): For instructions on changing bath cooling rates and switching temperature, refer to the
attached Maintenance Manual.
※ This step is only applicable to pour point testing modes (“PP” or “PP/CP” displayed in the test
mode field).
When the specimen temperature has reached a prescribed temperature (8), the first pour point
detection attempt begins. Detection is repeated at the detection interval chosen prior to testing,
which is shown in the test mode field.
Note (8): Pour point detection start temperature depends on the Expected pour point. If the
Expected pour point is below 30.0°C, a starting temperature of 15 above the Expected pour
point is used, otherwise a starting temperature somewhere in the range of 9°C to 14°C
above the Expected pour point is used.
If the pour point is detected in the first detection attempt, the test ends with the error message
shown in Fig. 15. In this case, a higher value of Expected pour point should be entered and the
test retried.
TROUBLE No.08
Example error message that is displayed when the Expected pour point is set to -25.0 but the pour
point is detected on the first attempt at a temperature of -10.0°C.
- 23 -
6.2.6. Cloud Point Detection
※ This step is only applicable to cloud point testing modes (“CP” or “PP/CP” displayed in the test
mode field).
The cloud point is detected when the intensity of light measured at the bottom of the specimen cup
drops due to clouding. Cloud point detection occurs at 0.1oC interval or integer values of
temperature as the temperature drops. When 1.0oC interval is selected, the reported cloud point is
the next lower integer. For example, MPC reports cloud point -13.2oC in 0.1oC interval, and then
-14.0oC in 1.0oC interval.
After cloud point detection, will be as follows:
Test mode PP/CP ⇒ The result flashes in the cloud point temperature field (see Fig. 15) (9) while
pour point detection continues.
Test mode CP ⇒ The result flashes in the current specimen temperature field (see Fig. 16) (9).
The RUN lamp is extinguished and a buzzer sounds intermittently for 8 seconds.
-19.0 FAST
Flashing
Appears when a CP is detected
in fast cooling sequence.
- 24 -
6.2.7. Pour Point Detection
※ This step is only applicable to pour point testing modes (“PP” or “PP/CP” displayed in the test
mode field).
When specimen flow is found to have stopped (see Section 2 on page8), the pour point
temperature flashes in the current specimen temperature field (see Figure 17 and see Figure 18)
(9). The RUN lamp is extinguished and a buzzer sounds intermittently for 8 seconds.
Note (9): Measured cloud points and pour points are displayed until either the RESET or START
key is pressed. Upon pressing either the RESET or START keys, the results are cleared
from the display, which returns to normal, and are stored in the last test results fields,
which can be seen in the details screen.
- 25 -
6.2.8. Data Printouts
After pour/cloud point detection, the Expected pour/cloud point and measured point are
automatically printed. To print detailed experimental information, such as such as specimen
temperature and pressurization times during testing, press the START key once after the
summary data has printed (10).
Note, however, that data cannot be printed after the RESET key has been pressed.
Note (10): The instrument can be modified to automatically print detailed experimental data after
every test run. For details, refer to the Maintenance Manual.
Note (11):If the bath temperature is over 20°C when testing completes, the WARM lamp turns on,
but no heating is performed. This continues for 3 minutes.
Note (12):Both the temperature and duration of heating can be modified. For details, refer to the
Maintenance Manual.
- 26 -
7. Data Storage Functionality
This instrument has the capacity to automatically store the results of the last 50 tests.
To access the results history, press and release the RESET key while holding down the MODE key.
The Test History Screen shown in Fig. 19 is displayed.
The most recent test results are always shown as data No.1, with data id numbers in increments of
one. Data recorded more than 50 test runs ago is discarded. Result sets can be scrolled through by
pressing the up and down arrow keys.
If the optional clock card is not installed, the date and time fields will all show 01/01/01 01:01.
The specimen name field always shows a value, even when specimen name input is disabled. (In this
case AAAAAA will typically be displayed as it is the default value).
If the optional printer is connected, pressing the FUNCTION key will print the entire test history.
