As we all know diarrhea is a disease that can affect anyone, including infants and
adults, and we as nursing students must continue to educate the public about how diarrhea
occurs and how the symptoms and treatment can be done. For that, I will explain about
diarrhea.

Diarrhea is the discharge of abnormal and liquid stool or bowel movements that are not
normal and liquid with a frequency more than usual. Diarrhea is also a condition of passing
stool that is not normal or unusual, characterized by increased volume, dilution, and
frequency more than 3 times a day. Diarrhea causes a lot of fluid and electrolyte loss
through feces. Diarrhea can be caused by several factors such as food malabsorption and
psychological infections. The causes of diarrhea can also be grouped into 6 major groups,
namely infection (caused by bacteria, viruses or parasites), malabsorption, allergies,
poisoning, immunodeficiency and other causes. The cause that is often found in the field or
clinically is diarrhea caused by infection and poisoning. Signs and symptoms of diarrhea in
the form of bowel movements more than 3 times, body weakness, no appetite, dry lips,
blood or mucus in the stool, in children can be seen sunken eyes. Symptoms can include
fever, nausea, vomiting and pain in the abdomen and bloody and mucus stools. Diarrhea
management can be done by cross-diarrhea or five steps to complete diarrhea. Giving fluids
is not the only way to deal with diarrhea but to improve the condition of the intestine and
speed up healing or stop diarrhea and prevent children from being malnourished due to
diarrhea are also ways to treat diarrhea. There are five steps to complete diarrhea using
ORS, giving zinc tablets for 10 consecutive days, continue giving breast milk (if this is in
infants) and eating, giving antibiotics (giving antibiotics is only beneficial for people with
diarrhea with blood), advice on parent or caregiver.

So until now, diarrheal disease is still a world health problem, especially in developing
countries. The magnitude of the problem consists of the high morbidity and mortality due
to diarrhea. In Indonesia, diarrhea is one of the main public health cases. Hopefully, with
my explanation earlier, the public could understand more about diarrhea for health. Thank
you so much for listening. You are all good listeners.
