PROBLEM SET #6
1. The velocities of flow in a 1-m diameter pipe are 5 m/s on the centerline and 4.85 m/s at
x =100mm. Determine the discharge assuming the flow is turbulent.
2. A liquid having sp.gr. of 0.788 flows at 3.2 m/s through a 100-mm diameter pipeline (f =
0.0158). (a) Determine the head loss per kilometer of pipe and (b) the wall shear stress.
3. In the syringe of the figure shown, the drug had density = 900 kg/m3and μ = 0.002 Pa-s. The
flow through the needle is 0.4 mL/s. Neglect head loss in the larger cylinder.
4. Oil, with ρ = 950 kg/m3and ν = 0.00002 m2/s, flows through a 300-mm diameter pipe that is
100m long with a head loss of 8 m. ε/D = 0.0002. Calculate the flow rate.
5. Oil with sp.gr. of 0.95 flows at 200 lit/sec through a 500 m of 200-mm diameter pipe (f =
0.0225). Determine (a) the head loss and (b) the pressure drop if the pipe slopes down at 10 oin
the direction of flow.
6. A pump draws 20 lit/s of water from reservoir A to reservoir B as shown. Assuming f = 0.02
for all pipes, compute the horsepower delivered by the pump and the pressure at points 1 and 2.

7. The head lost in each pipe in the figure is given by HL = kQ2, where Q is the discharge in
m3/s and HL is in meters. The values of k of each pipe are as follows:
K1 = 4.5 K2 = 23.9 K3 = 2.3
K4 = 3.1 K5 = 33.7 K6 = 6.1
If the total head lost in the system is 56 m, determine the following:
8. The total head lost from A to E in the figure shown is 15 m. Find the discharge in each pipe.
Assume f = 0.02 for all pipes.

1 450 600
2 600 500
3 360 450
4 480 450
5 540 600
