Unit

One – Written practice
Lesson One
Read the following dialogue:

Liz:  Hi, Daniel. How are you today?

Daniel: Hi, Liz. I'm not good. My pet is lost.

Liz: Oh, that's terrible. Can I help you?

Daniel: Yes, of course. Let's look around the neighborhood.
May be we find it.

Answer these questions. Say True (T) or False (F):

TRUE FALSE

Daniel missed his pet ________ ________

Daniel was good ________ ________

Liz though that it was wonderful ________ ________

Liz offered help to Daniel ________ ________

Now,   work   with   a   partner.   Try   to   complete   following   the

instructions:

Your partner: ___________________________________________
(Ask about his/her health)

You:  ___________________________________________________

(Answer pessimistically)

Your partner: ___________________________________________
(Express pain/offer help)

You: ____________________________________________________
(Thank your friend)
   Lesson Two

Read and comment the following paragraph:

Appearance.

Most   of   the   time   we   complain   about   the   way   we   look.   So

expressions like these are common:

If I am short, I want to be tall.
If I am blond, I want to be brunette.
If I have straight hair, I want to have it curly.

So, people will say:

I don't like the color of my hair so I will dye it.
I don't like my body so I will undergo surgery.
I don't like my weight so I will go on a diet.

The   worst   situation   is   when   people   do   what   their   friends

want them to do, in order to be accepted.

Answer these questions:

1. What is the paragraph about?
__________________________________________________________

2. Do you agree with this?
__________________________________________________________

3. What is your opinion about appearance?
__________________________________________________________

4.   What   do   you   think   about   kindness,   humbleness   and

friendliness?
__________________________________________________________
Read   the   following   dialogue.   Somewhere   in   the   city,   a
reporter is asking a few questions to a citizen:

Reporter: Good morning, Sir. My name is Miss X. I'm a T.V.
Reporter, and want to ask you a few questions. Would you
help me?

Citizen: Yes, sure.

Reporter: Good. What's your name?

Citizen: My name is Mr. Z.

Reporter:  Good.  Mr.   Z,   what's   your   opinion   about   Global

Warming?

Citizen: Well, I think it's a serious threat, a phenomenon
caused by human actions.

Reporter:  That's right. And how do you think we all human
beings would help to reduce its impact?

Citizen:  I   think   around   the   Globe,   workers,   factories,

governments   and   people   should   be   a   little   more   conscious
about this, and agree in a way to solve this problem.

Reporter: Thank you, Mr. Z.

Citizen: It's nothing at all, Miss X.

Now, imagine you are an interviewer in a T.V. program. You
interview a guest. Ask for his/her opinion about any given
topic. Follow this example:

You (interviewer): _______________________________________

Your guest: ______________________________________________

You (interviewer): _______________________________________

Your guest: ______________________________________________

Lesson Three

Look at these pictures. Then answer the questions:

What is he doing?
________________________________________________________

What is she doing?
________________________________________________________
What is the dog doing?
_________________________________________________________

What is the boy doing?
_________________________________________________________
Change these sentences to the negative form. Example:

You: Is your father traveling? (work)

Your partner: No, he's not traveling. He's working.

Now you continue. Use the words in parentheses:

Is Robert sleeping? (make the bed)
_________________________________________________________

Is Ana watching T.V.? (do the laundry)
_________________________________________________________

Is Aunt Carmen reading the newspaper? (help mom to cook)
_________________________________________________________

Is Uncle José drinking coffee? (repair the clock)
_________________________________________________________
Lesson Four

Look at this picture:

TRAVELING

BASEBALL MOVIES

SHOES
Carlos thinks about what he would do if he got good marks
this term:

If I get good marks this term, I will...

… go with my friends to see the baseball game

… travel with my family to Porlamar

… buy a new pair of shoes

… go to the cinema and see a movie

Make four sentences. Use the conditional to talk about the
things you would do, if it were possible.
