Gradable and Extreme Adjectives

Adjectives are words used to describe characteristics of a noun (like “beautiful”, “cold”,
“sad” and “cute”).

Some  adjectives  in  English  are  gradable  -  which  means  that  you  can  have  different
degrees in a scale of the quality you’re talking about.

For  example,  to  describe  how  cold  a day is, you have a range of words that you can use to
“grade” how cold the day is, in your opinion:

But  if  you  think  this  is  day  is  absurdly,  extremely,  awfully  (or  amazingly,  if  you  like the
winter)  cold,  you  may  want to say, instead of all these words, that the day is the extreme
of “cold”: it is freezing.

The word “freezing” is what we call the extreme form of the adjective “cold”.

If  it  is  already  the  extreme, it doesn’t make sense to say that the day is “a little freezing”
or  “very  freezing”.  You  cannot  grade  extreme  adjectives,  for  they  are  already  the
maximum  of  the  characteristic  we’re  talking  about.  In  this  case,  if  you  really  want  to
emphasize how freezing the day is, you may use words like:
