 No documented record exists about origin
 Crop of tropics & subtropics
 cultivated in Pak., India, Bangladesh,
Burma & Thailand region
 Important pulse crop of summer
 Seed used as Dal/Snacks, Straw as fodder
 Seed contains 25-32 % proteins
 Poor man meet
 Legume/Restorative crop which fixes N
 Warm weather crop
 Tolerate high temperature
 Sensitive to cloudy weather & frost
 All types of soils but sensitive to water
logged and saline soils
 Best suited soils are well drained loam soils,
with medium soil fertility.
 Heavy fertile soils promote vegetative growth
with less pods/fruits
 Light soils often give low yields
Seedbed preparation

 Does not require much preparations


 Two plowings followed by planking
 Planking for moisture conservation, even
distribution of seed and fertilizer &
breaking clods

 Drill is preferred method some time

 Drill having row to row distance 30 cm &
plant to plant 10 cm
 Plant population of 275,000 – 300,000 /h.
 Seed rate 20-25 kg/ha

 Being grown in rainfed areas so no need
of irrigation

then prepare for sowing

 Mash is attacked by different viral
diseases
 YMV & LCV are major diseases

 Whitefly could be a major pest
 Ready for harvesting when 90 % pods are
physiological mature
 Morning time good for harvesting
 Before threshing the pods should be dried in
the sun
 Store at proper place and dry for few days
 Threshing with wheat thresher
 Average yield ranges 450 – 500 kg/ha
