Russky Island Bridge, Russia
The Russky Bridge extends across the eastern Bosphorus

Strait from the Vladivostok town of the Russian peninsula
to the Russky Island. The bridge was developed for the
Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation Summit held in Russky
Island in 2012 and was officially opened in July 2012.
The bridge has 11 spans with a main span of 1,104m

between the 320m-high A-shaped pylons and runs to a
total distance of 3,100m. It employs Freyssinet’s compact
stay cable system integrating parallel strand cables
secured by steel anchorage boxes at the top of the
pylons. The clearance height of the Russky bridge is 70m
above the sea level.
Sutong Yangtze River Bridge, China
The Sutong Yangtze River Bridge connects the Suzhou

and Nantong cities across the Yangtze River, which
was previously connected only by ferries, a time-
consuming and dangerous mode of transport.
The bridge reduced the three to four-hour-long journey

by ferry across the river to five minutes by road over the
bridge. With the main span of 1,088m, the bridge has a
total length of 8,206m. The cable-stayed bridge has
306m-high inverted Y-shaped pylons to hold the central
span, allowing the passage of large container ships.
Built with an estimated investment of $750m, the

Sutong Yangtze River Bridge was opened to traffic in
2008
Stonecutters Bridge, Hong Kong
Stonecutters is a 1.6km-long cable-stayed bridge across the

Rambler Channel in Hong Kong. The bridge forms a part of
Route 8, an East-West motorway linking the International
Airport and the urban region of West Kowloon peninsula of
Hong Kong.
The bridge features a steel main span of 1,018m-long with

two 290m-tall concrete and stainless-steel towers. The
bridge deck is 53m-wide, which is divided into two boxes
and joined by cross girders.
The Stonecutters bridge has two bridge towers, with one on

Tsing Yi Island and the other on Stonecutters Island. The
bridge was designed to withstand Hong Kong’s strong
typhoon winds. Opened to traffic in 2009, the bridge houses
three lanes in each direction.
Suspension bridge
A suspension bridge is a
type of bridge in which the
deck is hung below
suspension cables on
vertical suspenders. The
first modern examples of
this type of bridge were
built in the early 1800s.
Tacoma Narrows Bridge
The Tacoma Narrows Bridge is the historical name given to

the twin suspension bridge—originally built in 1940—that
spanned the Tacoma Narrows strait.It was also the third
largest suspension bridge of its time, with a 2800-foot
central span and two side spans of 1100 feet each.
A west-side approach had a continuous steel girder of

450ft, while the east side had a long reinforced concrete
frame of 210ft. It had two cable anchorages of 26ft. Along
roadways, two 5ft. Sidewalks and two 8ft. Deep stiffening
girders. Among several other structural details, the
suspension cable anchorages to which the cables were
connected were made of 20,000 cubic yards of concrete,
6 lakh pounds of structural steel, and 2.7 lakh pounds of
reinforcing steel. Because of its extremely long length, it
was considered a ‘narrow bridge’.
Golden Gate Bridge
Golden Gate Bridge, suspension bridge spanning the

Golden Gate in California to link San Francisco with
Marin county to the north. Upon its completion in 1937, it
was the tallest and longest suspension bridge in the
world. The Golden Gate Bridge came to be recognized
as a symbol of the power and progress of the United
States, and it set a precedent for suspension-bridge
design around the world.
The main span, 1,280 metres (4,200 feet) long, is

suspended from two cables hung from towers 227
metres (746 feet) high; at midpoint the roadway is 81
metres (265 feet) above mean high water.

NEO Bankside (London)
A set luxury penthouse buildings at the heart of London, NEO

Bankside is an incredibly modern exoskeleton structure. The
building is comprised of a concrete frame that serves as the
core with exterior perimeter bracings that provides lateral
stability from wind loading, which reduces the need for sheer
walls. This allows the building to gain more floor spaces and
opens up possibilities for future developments. The diagonal
bracings are connected at every third floor by pinned nodes,
which creates a system that transfers lateral loads into the
main core of the structure.
The total residential provision of the scheme covers 28,600 m²,

with retail units provided at ground level with a total area of
1,044 m² and additional storage in the basement.
