Past Simple

The simple past is a verb tense that is used to talk about things that
happened or existed before now. Imagine someone asks what your
brother Wolfgang did while he was in town last weekend.
O passado simples é um tempo verbal que é usado para falar sobre coisas
que aconteceram ou existiram antes de agora.

Examples:
Wolfgang entered a hula hoop contest.
He won the silver medal.

There are two types of verbs used in the past simple tense:
regular and irregular. Regular verbs end with ‘ed’ (eg. studied,
worked, learned). Irregular verbs have different forms and you just
need to remember them (eg. won, did, made, put).
Existem dois tipos de verbos usados no passado simples: regulares e
irregulares. Os verbos regulares terminam com 'ed'. Os verbos irregulares
têm formas diferentes e você só precisa de aprender e lembrar deles.

We often use the words was and were to tell about the past.
Costumamos usar as palavras was (singular) e were (plural & you)
(=era/fui/estava) para contar sobre o passado.

naturalist who became famous for his theories of evolution and
natural selection. In South America, Darwin found that fossils of
extinct animals were similar to modern species. Many people
were strongly opposed to the idea of evolution because it
conflicted with their religious beliefs. Throughout his life, Darwin
was a hard-working scholar.
When Albert Einstein was young, his parents worried about him.
Einstein’s parents were concerned that Albert was “slow”. Albert
was a terrible student who didn’t want to attend classes regularly
