Your constant engagement with the different learning materials every

day enables you to gain new knowledge and deepen your understanding about
verb tenses. In this lesson, you will learn something new about verb tenses
that allow you to compose clear and coherent sentences using appropriate
grammatical structure in present perfect tense.

Read the following sentences.

1. I have worked hard this week.

• have worked is the present perfect tense in the

sentence because the action that occurred in the past
still carry on to the present time.

• have + worked is used in the sentence because the

subject (I) is a plural pronoun.

Plural pronoun

I have worked hard this week.

Singular pronoun

She hard this week.

has worked

1
2. He has lost his wallet in his bag.

• has lost is the present perfect tense in the sentence

because the action that occurred in the past still carry on
to the present time.

• has + lost is used because the subject (He) is a singular

pronoun. So, has is to be used with the past participle of
the verb (lost) which expresses the idea that something
occurred before another action in the past.

The present perfect is a verb tense which is used to show

an action that has taken place once or many times
before now. The present perfect is most frequently used
to talk about experiences or changes that have taken
place but there are other less common uses as well.

• The present perfect tense is formed by using

has/have+past participle tense of the verb. Use has if
the subject is singular and have if it is plural.
