1. Compare Rutherford’s Planetary Model of Atom with solar system..

2. Drawback of Rutherford’s atom model

According to Rutherford’s atom model electrons should eventually collapse into the
nucleus as they loss their energy while revolving within the filed of attraction of the
nucleus. But this does not happen in atoms.

3. •Bohr’s model of Atom

Niels Bohr proposed a new atomic model by giving a better explanation to the
Rutherford model. This model is known as Bohr’s model
Main ideas of the Bohr Model•
• Electrons revolve around the nucleus of an atom in fixed paths called orbits or shells.
• Electrons in each shell have a definite energy. Hence shells are also called Energy
levels.
• As long as an electron revolves in a particular orbit, its
energy remains constant.
• The energy of the shells increases as the distance from the nucleus increases.
• The shells around the nucleus can be numbered from near the nucleus as 1, 2, 3, 4, 5....
or represented by the letters K, L, M, N, O.............
4. According to Bohr Model, the revolving paths traced by electrons are called ............
Orbits (shells).

5. Complete the following

Shell

Nucleus
6.Which are the fundamental particles whose masses are mainly responsible for the mass of an
atom? Give reasons?
Protons and neutrons( since the mass of electron is zero)
7. Define mass number. How it is represented?
The total number of protons and neutrons in an atom is called the mass number.
This is represented by the letter A.
8. Define atomic number. How it is represented?
The total number of protons in an atom is called its Atomic Number. The letter 'Z' is
used to represent the atomic number.
9.Which is the fundamental particle of an atom that can be displaced when atoms rub against
each other or they undergo chemical reactions with other atoms?
Electron
Atomic Number = Number of protons = Number of electrons
Mass Number = Number of protons + Number of Neutrons
Number of Neutrons = Mass Number - Atomic Number
Symbols are used to represent elements. We write the mass number on the top left side of the
symbol and atomic number on the bottom left side of the symbol.
eg....2311Na
10.Symbols of certain atoms are given in Table .Complete the table.

1 1 1 1 0

2 4 2 2 2

3 7 3 3 4

6 12 6 6 6
10 20 10 10 10

18 40 18 18 22
