Background of the Study

In present times, social networking sites particularly Facebook as an essential

tool for expression and for the social life of almost everybody. Youth are the ones that

most likely to share, create, and respond to contents around the globe. Characterizing

them as students, they are also subjected to academic dilemma that is also a contributor

to the rise of social issues like suicide, depression, and stress and therefore uses social

platforms, such as Facebook, to vent out this kind of issues. In this case, the Grade 11

Senior High School students of Caraga State University are no less different and

therefore can experience this kind of problems too.

We opted for this title for the sole reason that we see the dilemmas rising along

with the implementation of K-12. Because of the unforgiving changes in the curriculum,

Senior High Learners now experience great problems in their current capacity to adapt

and mitigate from the old curriculum to the new one. Connected with this problem is

the growing Facebook posts portraying academic issues faced by Senior High Learners

(suicide, depression, and stress) that is caused by the over-congested curriculum that is

needed to be sustained by the learners, even with the Grade 11 Archimedes Senior High

School of Caraga State University to get a passing grade.

Review of Related Studies

Bekoe, R., et. al. (2015)’s study proved that there is a significant effect of stress

on academic performance among Senior High School (SHS) students in Ghana. It came

up with a result that stress is associated with poor academic performance. Also, the

sources of stress among SHS Students includes boyfriend and girlfriend relationship

problems, social activities, course load, examination, lack/ inadequate family support

and feeling homesick.

Reynolds, E. (2015) conducted a research on the effects of depressive symptoms

and mental health stigma to perceived stress and suicidal behaviors in college students.

The findings of his study came up with an analysis that stress, depression, and suicide

all are directly proportionate to one another; the greater the stress, the higher the

depression, thus making a big chance to do suicide. With this, it proved that suicide is a

leading cause of death in college students.

Choudhury, et.al. (2016) used the social media, Reddit, to discover shifts to

suicidal ideation from mental health content in social media. This proved that social

media really helps in identifying individuals likely to engage in suicidal ideation in the

future. Still from the same author, another study found out that social media contains

useful signals for characterizing the onset of depression in individuals. The more the

users are exposed to these posts, the more they are aware of the situation.

Gap of the Study

The studies of Bekoe, R., et. al. (2015) and Reynolds, E. (2015) both tested

depression, anxiety, psychological distress, perceived stress, and suicide behaviors on

different samples of students, high school and college students. In this study,

depression, stress, and suicide are being tested since these are the most common social

issue present within the research locale. With the study of Choudhury, et. al. (2016)

proving that social media is an effective tool in assessing a student’s perception, the

researchers chose Facebook as the only social media platform where all the students in

the area are most engaged to. Overall, the study covers the level of awareness and

perception of Grade 11 Archimedes Senior High School students of Caraga State

University – Main Campus A.Y. 2017-2018 on the most imperiled posts on Facebook
that imposes the most common issues such as suicide, depression, and stress that is

caused by academic activities.

Statement of the Problem

In order to find answers, we sought to answer the following questions:

1. Are the students aware of the most common Facebook posts that imposes problems

caused by academic activities?

a. Suicide

b. Depression

c. Stress

2. What are the positive perceptions of students regarding the most common posts on

Facebook that imposes problems caused by academic activities?

a. Suicide

b. Depression

c. Stress

3. What are the negative perceptions of students regarding the most common posts on

Facebook that imposes problems caused by academic activities?

a. Suicide

b. Depression

c. Stress

4. Are the students urged to do the same issues that are commonly posted on Facebook

because of academic activities?

5. Should the students feel responsible in knowing the most common Facebook posts

portraying issues caused by academic activities?

6. Is there a significant change on the student’s perceptions on the importance of

education in our country?

Significance of the Study

This research aims to help the following:

The Grade 11 Archimedes Senior High Students of Caraga State University. They

will be more aware of the most common posts on facebook that portrays issues caused

by academic problems thus giving them an idea on how to adapt and mitigate when they

are faced with the same circumstances.

The Senior High Students of Caraga State University. This research paper is

created in high hopes on creating a milestone of awareness on issues the students are

facing regarding academically-induced problems not just to the population of Section

Archimedes but also to the entire CSU-Senior High School.

The students in general. They will have an idea of what issues are they likely to

face due to academically-induced problems. With this, they can create their own

preventive measures on how to adjust and mitigate with the circumstances so that this

will not hinder on their learning in school.

The Researchers in future. This research paper shall serve as basis and a

guideline to future researches that aims to create a more in-depth view on the level of

awareness of students on the issues that they face due to academic problems.

Research Locale and Respondents

The study was conducted in the Philippines, particularly in the main campus of a

state-controlled university in Agusandel Norte known as Caraga State University which

is located at Ampayon, Butuan City. Currently, the university offers undergraduate and
graduate degree programs in addition to some technical and vocational courses.

Furthermore, as a result of the implementation of the K-12 Curriculum, the university

also offers 2 years of Senior High School with the Academic Strand—Science,

Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) and Technical-Vocational-

Livelihood (TVL) Track—Agri-Crop Production.

The study will involve the Grade 11 Senior High School students of Caraga State

University – Main Campus coming from Section Archimedes having a population of 36

students.

Proposed Methodology/ Procedures

The researchers will use the descriptive research method for this study in order

to obtain detailed and factual information to describe the phenomena. Specifically, the

researchers will utilize the survey approach of the descriptive research method to be

able to determine the level of awareness as well as the perceptions of the Grade 11

Archimedes students about the common posts in Facebook tackling several social issues

caused by academic activities.

In selecting the samples, Stratified Random Sampling will be utilized as the

sampling technique wherein the researchers will divide the entire population into

different subgroups called the strata—in this study, the strata will be the gender.

Additionally, the researchers will first use the Slovin’s formula to be able to identify the

sample size or number of respondents for the study. Of the 36 students from the whole

population, only 33 students will be the respondents for this study, with the male

stratum having 16 students and female stratum consisting of 17 students.

The researchers will use survey questionnaires as the primary data gathering

instrument for this study containing the socio-demographic characteristics of the

respondents as well as the meat questions for the survey for the level of awareness and

perception of respondents towards the issues suicide, depression, and stress.

Consequently, the first hand data will be analyzed by the researchers through the

use of several statistical tools to aid in interpreting the results, and be able to create a

substantial discussion and conclusion.
