Title of the Activity: Cite it Right!


Most Essential Learning Competency: Compose a research report on a relevant social
issue.
Objective: Understand the basics of preparing a preliminary outline.
Activity 1
Directions: Get yourselves informed with what preliminary outline through reading the
following explanations and examples.

A preliminary outline identifies how you think you are going to subdivide the various
aspects of your research. The working outline is created to organize all of the ideas you plan to
include in the research paper.

A working outline should be set up using the following format:

1. Begin with a thesis statement.


Thesis statement - one sentence that expresses the main idea of a research
paper or essay. A strong thesis statement is specific. It is not a topic, but a
brief explanation of the topic in a way that sets the direction of the paper
or essay.
2. Each main idea of the project should then be numbered with Roman numerals
(I, II, III, etc.) beginning with the introduction.
3. Information that will be used to support or develop each main idea is to be
indented and labelled with capital letters (A, B, C, etc.).
4. Additional information which gives more detail to a supporting idea is also
indented and labelled with Arabic numbers (1, 2, 3, etc.).
5. The final section of the working outline is the conclusion.
6. Always use at least two divisions for each category. Outlines cannot have I
without II or A without B.
7. Information should NOT be put into complete sentences. Keep phrases short
and to the point.

Thesis Statement: The war against urban poverty should be a major concern of the
public and private sectors.

I. Indications of Urban Poverty


A. Inadequate housing
B. Crime and delinquency rates
C. Problem of street children
1. Malnutrition
2. Illiteracy

II. Causes of Urban Poverty


A. Lack of employment opportunities
B. Continuing rural-urban migration
C. Inadequate social welfare assistance

III. Solutions to Eliminate Urban Poverty


A. Rural-based economic development strategy
B. Involvement of non-government organizations
C. Comprehensive urban-renewal program
