1.1. Introduction: Relationship between Load-Settlement and Contact Pressure
Load-settlement and contact pressure distribution are intimately interconnected. For axially
loaded rigid foundation, the distribution of the contact pressure changes from that of the
Boussinesq type to a parabola as indicated in Fig. 1.1 by continuously increasing the loading.
From the figure, one may identify four distinct loading phases and the following observations
may be made:
Fig. 1.1: Relationship between load settlement and contact pressure distribution
under axially loaded rigid foundation
(i) Phase 1: This region represents the normal loading range of foundations. The plastic
zone at the edges is relatively small. If a higher factor of safety, , is taken, the contact
pressure distribution will be that of the Boussinesq type.
(ii) Phase 2: By lowering the factor of safety, , i.e., taking higher load, one allows the
plastic zone at the edges to increase. Thus, only the inner portion of the contact pressure
distribution follows the Boussinesq distribution as shown in the figure.
(iii) Phase 3: This region represents a critical condition. Only a very small portion of the
contact pressure distribution follows the Boussinesq distribution. In fact, one may claim
that the possible statical readjustment of the contact pressure distribution is arrived.

(iv) Phase 4: At this stage the soil fails and the contact pressure distribution will take the
shape of a parabola.
