1. Introduction
The purpose of this document is to explain some of the FAQ‟s about ArtiosCAD setup and the
Kongsberg tables.
It isn‟t a full user guide to neither ArtiosCAD nor XL/XE-Guide, but hopefully it will be a great help
for road warriors when trying to establish a decent workflow for our customers.
More and more Kongsberg table / ArtiosCAD users have a table equipped with i-cut Vision Pro. The
focus of this document is customers without i-cut Vision Pro, but one chapter (12) is describing how
to setup the workflow for these customers. More information about this workflow will follow.
4
2. General Sample Making in Corrugated and Folding
Carton
5
Specify a Kongsberg Job Setup File in the output (optional)
Saving new Job Setup Files in XL-Guide or XE-Guide will automatically update the list of available
Job Setup Files in ArtiosCAD
Database and design information are automatically included the Header of the cutting file (*.acm
file)
6
Header information displayed in XL-Guide
By sorting the list of available cutting files after different criteria‟s (as Material, Customer, Due Date,
etc), the table operator can effectively utilize the capacity of the machine.
7
2.1 Making Samples in Folding Carton
Buttons for Make Counter, Make Sample or Make All available in the output dialog
8
Sample and Counter in the Output Preview (Zoomed In View)
Counter file automatically named FilenameC.acm and turns OFF the Matrix Function in XE-Guide
9
The Matrix Function in XE-Guide (and XL-Guide set to Folding Carton Application) ensures that the
knife is cutting fully through the carton when cutting the counter, but when a new carton board is
placed on top of the counter, the matrix function will prevent the knife from cutting through both the
sample and the counter.
A single Sample Counter can therefore be used for multiple Samples
Nicks in the design can automatically be output as gaps in the sample file. There are even options
for adjusting nick overcut
10
Critical Geometry are handled by the ArtiosCAD sample output, special features to prevent overcuts
are available, so are cutting speed improving features as Over-crease and automatically round
corners to prevent “unnecessary” time consuming tool lifts
11
Can be “Sized” by the output and will automatically add correct offset from the zero pint in the
cutting file. By In XL-Guide the reference point can be set to the Sheet edge or a Print Registration
Mark by using the laser pointer or the camera. This will ensure correct print to cut registration for
preprinted sheets.
PS! The XL-Guide function “Origin in lower left corner” must be turned OFF
12
Using the “Second Tool for Cross Grain” option in ArtiosCAD gives very flexible creasing options
13
Double Pass Creasing with different depth can also be set up directly in XL-Guide‟s Job Setup Files
by specifying the same Logical Tools twice (or multiple times) with different depths.
Sometimes very useful if you have a very dry, fragile backliner or struggling with sufficient creasing
force in double and triple wall material
All the Kongsberg Tables, from the oldest to the Latest and Greatest are predefined as available
Tuning Entries in ArtiosCAD Outputs with correct working area (Device Size) and necessary
parameters. There are outputs for Samplemaking and Plots (Drafting) so just be selecting correct
output type, plots or sample/counters are generated with predefined preferences.
The list of available Kongsberg Tables are constantly being updated in new versions of ArtiosCAD
Plot outputs (Drafting) are optimized for Plotting Speed while Sample Outputs are
optimized/sequenced for Sample Making. Just select the wanted output and a perfectly prepared
cutting file is ready to be cut on the Kongsberg table.
Our CAM Engineers installing and servicing the Kongsberg Tables are familiar with the Kongsberg
Output from ArtiosCAD, so installations are pretty straight forward.
This is very convenient both for new table installations and when relocating older second hand
Kongsberg tables that somehow seems to never die
14
3. ArtiosCAD Cad-X in XL/XE-Guide
If XL/XE-Guide is already installed you can install ArtiosCAD and manually register it by opening the
folder C:\xl-guide\SYSTEM and drag the file CadXContain.dll and drop it on file REGSVR32.EXE
in the same folder.
You should get the confirmation window below
All these setting are found in Option -> Defaults -> Design Defaults
For the English version of ArtiosCAD they are all set, but we have seen occasions on translated
version were these parameters do not exist, or has been translated so the reference to the file does
not match the file name (i.e. the German version).
You need a license to configure this if it does not work!
Please bear in mind that every time you open a „foreign file format‟ (like DXF or CFF2) in XL-Guide it
will first be imported into ArtiosCAD and converted to a „native‟ ArtiosCAD file (*.ard)
The Import Tuning will make sure that all the attributes in the foreign files are mapped to correct
Layer(s), Linetype(s) and Pointage in ArtiosCAD.
When you click Make Sample or Make Plot it will be converted to Kongsberg format (*.acm) using
the Outputs predefined in ArtiosCAD.
If something goes wrong, you need to find out if it’s the import or export that fails!
15
3.2 How to use
ArtiosCAD files (*.ard) can be opened directly in XL-Guide via Cad-X technology. This is the Cad-X
(ArtiosCAD) dialog, and Counter, Sample or Plot can be made directly from this dialog.
Note the button for “Print Label”. This option will be covered later in this document *1
Other file types can also be opened directly in XL-Guide via Cad-X like:
CFF2 (*.cf2)
DDES (*.ds2)
DXF (*.dxf)
HPGL (*.hpg)
PDF (*.pdf)
All file formats that can be opened/imported in ArtiosCAD can also be opened/imported in XL-Guide
via Cad-X.
We can currently import PDF as vectors in ArtiosCAD, but this requires the PDF Import/Export option
currently not available in XL-Guide/Cad-X
16
“Use Kongsberg Defaults” should be activated!!!
Specific import tuning can be set from XL-Guide and saved in ArtiosCAD defaults via Cad-X. CFF2
import tuning dialog shown below.
17
Using the Kongsberg Defaults mentioned above will result in the following:
Import Tuning:
Outputs:
18
When XL/XE-Guide set to Folding Carton:
Option -> Defaults -> Outputs -> Artios -> Kongsberg CadX Outputs (do not rename anything)
Kongsberg CadX FC Samplemaker are being used when the Make counter and Make sample
buttons are used in the Cad-X window
19
3.3 Sample Labels
Sample Labels can be printed from ArtiosCAD, or directly from the Cad-X dialog *1, on any standard
Label Writer such as a Dymo Label writer. Database information and a small picture of the actual
design are automatically added to the “Sample Report”, and this report is of course customizable in
ArtiosCAD. See standard example label below.
Sample labels are self adhesive and easy to glue on the sample, and simplifies further handling of
the sample since it‟s easier to recognize for sales persons bringing it directly to their customer or
when shipping it.
It also looks much far more professional than post-it stickers or other additional “documents”
To make this work the Dymo Label Writer must me installed, and from ArtiosCAD Options ->
Defaults -> Outputs -> Artios -> Kongsberg CadX Outputs (do not rename anything) -> Kongsberg
CadX LabelWriter this printer should be selected from the Windows Driver list under the Device
Tab
20
!!!Note!!! You may change the settings in any of these Kongsberg CadX entries, but you
cannot rename them! The names are hard coded from XL/XE-Guide!!!
21
4. Cutting Coating Blankets (aka Varnish Blankets)
Coating Blankest should be cut from the Inside so set side permanently to Inside
22
Add CB.acm to the file name to distinguish it from the sample file
23
Select only the Coating Blanket layer to output
24
The option “Split lines connection corners” gives better cutting results, but is slower to cut. Discuss
pros and cons with the customer!
Sample Counter can be disabled (set to None) for all Crease lines
25
4.2 How to use
Create or open the wanted design
Use the Coating Free Area tool to create coating free areas in the designs
Coating free areas “rotated” to the correct flaps using the General Rotate tool
26
Single design converted to manufacturing, nested using the Reverse Second Row nest option, and
sheet size shrinked to actual size.
From the Menu: Tools -> Geometry Macros… -> Manufacturing Tools -> Coating Blanket -> Coating
Blanket
Select “Do not apply shrink”. This will be done in the output
27
These values should be pre-adjusted to customer‟s specification
Ready to be output
28
The “Size Only” of the annotation lines will apply the correct offset from the corner of the coating
blanket to the cut lines
PS! The XL/XE-Guide function “Origin in lower left corner” must be turned OFF
29
5. Kongsberg Drill Tool
ArtiosCAD7.70 has a new function for Drill Tool in Sample Making (Specify Drill holes smaller than
Diameter: xx)
3. Go to: Options -> Defaults -> Plotting Style Catalog and select CAM.ARTIOS.GCMC, and
verify that Sample drill holes is set to Tool number 4
30
4. Save and Close Shared defaults
31
5.2 How to use
Create or open your design
Add holes as Cut lines by using the standard Circle Radius Tool
All holes smaller than the Diameter specified in the output will be output as P4 with D3 in the .acm
file.
32
6. Print Registration Marks placed Freehand
33
6.2 How to use
Create or open your design
Go to the menu: Tools -> Geometry Macro Catalog and select your preferred Print Registration
Marks, or simply just create circles with diameter ~ 6mm in the Print Registration Layer as line type
Print Registration. The circles can be filled, but is not required.
34
6.3 Do the Output
The .acm file will contain P8 for the registration marks, and P8 should be mapped to the Camera in
the job setup file.
XL-Guide will „scan‟ the .acm files for P8 and use the camera to locate them.
35
7. Print Registration Marks with position in the Header
This is the ‘old’ method. Requires the 4 registration marks to be placed symmetrical.
Select a suitable
NC tuning for
the GNC driver
36
Specify

PS! The file ACM_Adjust-sam-reg.txt must exist in the \ServerLib catalog or another
catalog specified in the ArtiosCAD INTSEARCH string
37
7.2 How to use
Create or open your design
Go to the menu: Tools -> Geometry Macro Catalog and select your preferred Print Registration
Macro
38

CAM Tooling Setup Catalog
43
Outputs
44
8.2 How to use
Select the MultiCut Parameter Set. This can be set to be your Default singe design parameter set.
This parameter set uses a “New Design Template” that adds variables for the Diameter of the Milling
Bit (MB) and the Overlap (OL) when Fill Mill are required.
Create the geometry equal to the final result. The output will automatically generate radius
compensation equal to half the Diameter of the tool.
45
Outside Radius Compensation:
Linetype: Die Board Edge (170)
Subtype: = Milling Depth
Bridging: No Bridging
Pointage: Any Pointage (0-8)
Center tool:
Linetype: Die Etch (18)
Subtype: = Milling Depth
Bridging: No Bridging
Pointage: Any Pointage (0-8)
46
By clicking RunTimeData… in the output dialog, you‟ll also be able to change the tool diameter, but
the preferred way is by making a Rebuild of the design and change the variables.
47
48
8.3 Tips & Tricks & Limitations for Milling
Add Die Board Edge, Die Registration Holes & Die Etch to you default line type set
Geometry must form a closed loop. Otherwise the radius compensation would not work
correctly
Always check for Double Lines and Gaps
Using the “View Mode” to filter lines by type is sometimes useful to find errors in a design
Select by Example using both Line Type and Subtype Attributes is also another useful feature
Everything inside a closed loop of Die Registration Hole, Subtype “FillMill” will be milled away.
You can currently not keep an “Island” of Die Board Edge inside a “Lake” of Die Registration
Hole
CAM type output to the MultiCut Head requiring Header Information about the Register Marks must
have this line type set to “Size Only” in the CAM Tooling Setup Catalog, and the same Post
Processing Command file specified in the Advanced Section
49
9. Kongsberg Rubber Cutting
Go to: Options -> Defaults -> Output and make a copy of the customers sample output (i.e.
Kongsberg XL22 – FC sample cutting & matrix) and rename (ie. Kongsberg XL22 – Rubber Cutting)
Select
Rubber
Sheets
50
the CAM Tooling you
just created
51
9.2 How to use
Create your layout using the Nesting tool
52
Create the Rubber Nest using the Layout Rubber tool
53
There will be separate files for each Rubber Sheet
54
10. CAM Tooling Setup in general
A CAM Tooling Setup can be used to make special outputs with multiple operations (tools) per line
type, subtype, separate tool for bridge etc…etc…
The basic idea is to filter different attributes in the ArtiosCAD file to different tools on the machine
The ArtiosCAD attributes that can be filtered in the Tool Selection are:
Line Types (all)
Sub Types (0 – 100 per line type)
Pointages (0 – 8)
Slot Width
Zero length Lines and Arcs (typically set to “Do not output”)
Specific Length of Lines and Arcs (using the LEN command)
Specific Radius of Arcs and Circles (using the RAD command)
Etc…etc…
Once they are filtered they can be sent to any of the 30 Tools specified in the Tool List
These tools can be virtually anything
Knife for long Lines
Knife for short Lines
Knife for small Arcs
Knife for the first Cut
Mill for the second Cut
Knife for the third Cut
Etc…etc…
It‟s possible to set up multiple tools for a certain selection, so that the same line can be output as
different tools (i.e. Cut the front liner with a knife, mill the flute with a milling bit and cut the back
liner with a knife)
Each selection can be grouped into 99 different groups and each group can be optionally optimized.
All the tools must be mapped correctly in the job setup file in XL-Guide.
55
11. Manual Sequencing
When all other options to cut a design perfectly fail, the last resort is to manually sequence the job.
Sequencing should not be done directly in a design, mainly because it will be re-sequenced by the
output.
There are only 2 ways to „force‟ a design to be cut in a special sequence:
1. Do the output to a workspace layer and sequence that (recommended)
2. Use a Plot output without optimization (not recommended)
This is the job we want to cut, and we want to cut all the bolt holes first, followed by the larger
diameters in the order of inner to outer.
Go to: File -> Output and select the output you normally use (i.e. Your Kongsberg XL44 –
Corrugated sample cutting).
In the output dialog, click Properties… and select Output Device = Workspace Layer
Give the Layer a proper name (i.e. Out just because it‟s easy so spell and remember)
56
Click OK and do the output by clicking Make Sample
The output will no be done to the Layer you specified, and the linetype(s) in that layer will be
sample linetypes (i.e. Sample Knife, Sample Crease, Sample Partial Cut etc… and not ordinary Cut,
Crease and Partial Cut lines).
Yes, there is a big difference between how generic lines are treated vs sample line types.
Make sure that you output layer is the only active layer before you click the Sequence tool.
Contrary to activate Sequencing with the Main Design layer active, you’ll not be prompted to
Disable Rebuild when you do it in an output layer.
Screenshot below shows as example if Sequence is activated in the Main Design layer.
57
Enter group or select Sequence All to set the desired order of cuts by indicating the Items
PS! You can also use the Reverse Direction tool to change the direction of all or certain lines.
After you have sequenced it to you own preferences, use the standard output to generate the
sample file.
Make sure that the output layer is the only visible layer, and since the linetype(s) here are Sample
Line Types, they‟ll not be reorganized by the output, they‟ll be output exactly as they are, in the
very same order and direction.
Again it’s important that Sequencing and Optimizing is turned off in XL-Guide!
58
12. i-script output from ArtiosCAD to i-cut Vision
A lot of our i-machine customers are also equipped with ArtiosCAD. For these customers the i-script
output is the recommended way of transferring jobs from ArtiosCAD to the table.
In order to run ArtiosCAD jobs on the table, the job has often been exported to DXF or HPGL and
imported into i-cut, or exported as ACM and run directly from XL/XE/XP-Guide. Using DXF or HPGL
results in less efficient cutting and creasing, often also in poorer quality, because i-cut will interpret
polylines (lines and arcs cut as one continuous path) differently from ArtiosCAD. Using ACM
introduces a need for training the operator in XX-Guide user interface in addition to i-cut, which is
the “main” user interface for these customers.
Introducing i-script (i-cut exchange format) output makes sure polylines and cutting directions are
maintained from ArtiosCAD through i-cut to the table.
What is not necessary maintained is the cutting order defined in ArtiosCAD, with functions like
“Reverse the last line” in slots. The result is that cutting time is similar to or sometimes shorter than
with ACM output, cutting quality might still be an issue depending on design and quality of the
corrugated board. By enabling the “Keep Curve Sequence after Import” the exact same cutting order
as defined in ArtiosCAD is ensured.
12.1 Usage
Three outputs are included in Example Defaults in ArtiosCAD version 7.60 and in Shared Defaults on
7.70 and newer.
One is for corrugated samplemaking, one for folding carton samplemaking and one for plotting.
Please note that the “samplemaking” outputs are purposely made more optimized for production,
less for making the perfect sample, compared to samplemaking output to ACM.
The plotting output is for plotting as well as input to the i-cut based JobPrep Station coming together
with i-cut 7.
As soon as the installation is done these outputs are available from the File-Outputs menu.
A fourth output optimized for milling jobs is available, but not supplied with ArtiosCAD 7.70.
The main idea with this output is to send the basic design from ArtiosCAD to i-cut and leave all
milling preparations to i-cut (either i-cut Vision Pro running on the table PC or the i-cut based
JobPrep Station), which is optimized for this task.
Please note!
This workflow should be installed only at customers with ArtiosCAD, i-cut and a Kongsberg table.
Please note that the predefined outputs are based upon the device size of a XL22 (2190 x
1680)
It might be required to edit the device size on the position tab for larger table.
59
13. Short-run production Kongsberg XP-A
Almost every design that should be cut and unloaded on a Kongsberg table with an in and out stack
requires nicks.
The size and amount of nicks material dependent, and can only be determined by experience.
It‟s recommended to place the various Nick tools on a customized toolbar for easy access.
60
13.2 How to use
Create or open the design. Add nicks in proper position. Make the output. The size of the nicks can
be temporary changed during the output dialog by going to: Properties -> Sample Line Types and
specify an Adjustment for nick overcut. A positive value gives larger nicks, a negative value gives
smaller nicks.
PS! Changing the value here will not update the ard file, just the acm file.
61
14. Re-board and Honeycomb material
*1 required for the new V-notch linetypes, realistic 3D rendering and Drill Tool support and Re-
board by default in the database. The Tab/Slot tool for 3D assembly is also new for version 7.70 and
is very useful for Re-board.
The Drill Tool described in chapter 5 is also an important improvement for Re-board and Honeycomb
workflows.
62
This is how the new linetypes looks in 2D. The red lines along the perimeter of the box visualize how
the cut will be in the back liner, and the black line how it will be in the front liner. The “Reverse
Direction” tool can be used to change direction of lines, and this direction will be maintained in the
output.
The small holes will be output to the Drill Tool as P4 with a D3 command as described in chapter 5
And 3D view
63
