Open Ended Lab

Name: ________NOOR SABA__________________ Roll No: _____K-18EL101________________

Score: ____________ Signature of Lab Engineer: _________________ Date: _____________________

Objectives:
After performing different lab activities, students have been engaged to solve the following
problems as an additional task in the lab.
Task. No: 1
Construct and Verify the operation of bridge rectifier circuit or center tap rectifier circuit.
Bridge Rectifier:
Bridge rectifiers are circuits which convert alternating current (AC) into direct current (DC), this
is done by using diodes in the bridge circuit configuration. This type of configuration usually
consists of four diodes which cause the output generated to be of the same polarity irrespective
of the polarity at the input. The same output obtained by bridge rectifiers can be achieved by
center tapped rectifiers, the only difference here is of configuration.

Working:
When input AC signal is applied across the bridge rectifier, during the positive half cycle two
diodes work in forward biased state and allows electric current while the other two diodes are
reverse biased and blocks electric current. On the other hand, during the negative half cycle the
diodes which were in forward biased will now work in reverse biased state and the diodes which
were in reverse biased state will now work in forward biased state.

Task. No: 2
Use MATLAB to verify the input/output characteristics of BJT in common emitter mode.
(You can use either MATLAB programming of Simulink)
Bi-polar Junction Transistor:
Bipolar junction transistor (BJT) consists of two PN junctions connected back-to-back. The
operation of the BJT depends on the flow of both majority and minority carriers. There are two
types of BJT: NPN and PNP transistors. Further BJTs can work in three different modes,
namely: Common Emitter, Common Collector and Common Base mode.
Common Emitter Mode:
The configuration in which the emitter is connected between the collector and base is known as a
common emitter configuration. The input circuit is connected between emitter and base, and the
output circuit is taken from the collector and emitter. Thus, the emitter is common to both the
input and the output circuit, and hence the name is the common emitter configuration.
Input Characteristics in Common Emitter:
The curve plotted between base current IB and the base-emitter voltage VBE is called Input
characteristics curve.

Output Characteristics in Common Emitter:

In CE configuration the curve draws between collector current IC and collector-emitter voltage
VCE at a constant base current IB is called output characteristic.
