1 Scope
1.1 This Specification together with the Data Sheets covers the minimum mandatory
requirements for centrifugal fluorocarbon refrigeration units for industrial /
process applications both onshore and offshore. This Specification does not
apply to refrigeration units for utility service.
2.1 Any conflicts between this specification and other applicable Saudi Aramco
Materials System Specifications (SAMSSs), Engineering Standards (SAESs),
Standard Drawings (SASDs), or industry standards, codes and forms shall be
resolved in writing by the Company or Buyer Representative through the
Manager, Consulting Services Department, Saudi Aramco, Dhahran.
2.2 Direct all requests to deviate from this specification in writing to the Company or
Buyer Representative, who shall follow internal company procedure SAEP-302
and forward such requests to the Manager, Consulting Services Department of
Saudi Aramco, Dhahran.
2.3 All deviations from this Specification shall be separately listed by the Vendor in
his quotation and shall refer to the relevant paragraph numbers.

4.1 Centrifugal refrigeration units for industrial service shall be supplied by Vendors
qualified by experience in manufacturing the units proposed. To qualify, the
Vendor must have manufactured at the proposed point of manufacture, at least
two units of comparable speed, power, refrigeration capacity and evaporation
temperature level. These units must have been in continuous service for at least
one year and must be performing satisfactorily.

The critical areas relevant to the mechanical design which must be demonstrated
to the satisfaction of Saudi Aramco include, but are not limited to the following:
1) Compressor sealing system;
2) Compressor bearing design and lube oil system;
3) Number of compressor stages and staging arrangement;
4) Casing size and design including inlet configuration;
5) Compressor rotor dynamics;
6) Compressor impeller design and performance;
7) Material selection;
8) Power transmission components;
9) Condenser;
10) Evaporator.
5 Basic Design
5.1 General
5.1.1 The refrigeration unit shall require the minimum amount of site
installation work. The complete package unit, with all components,
shall be assembled, aligned and pre-checked in the Vendor's shop prior
to shipment. Units shall be completely piped and wired by the Vendor.

5.1.2 Provision shall be made for checking the alignment of the equipment
train during operation. The Vendor shall provide and install all
benchmarks, dowels, brackets etc. required by the specified system.
The Vendor shall ensure that adequate space for installation and
observation of the measuring devices is provided. If specified in the
Purchase Order, the Vendor shall supply a complete set of necessary
measuring devices required to conduct the alignment.
5.1.3 The Vendor shall be responsible for ensuring that the noise level of the
entire unit, including control valves, compressors, drivers, heat
exchangers, etc., is in accordance with the specified requirements.
5.1.5 The duty of the refrigeration package shall be as defined on the Data
Sheet and/or the Purchase Order as applicable. The Vendor is fully
responsible for the overall design and continuous operation from 0 to
100% heat load of the complete package under high and low
condensing conditions.
5.1.6 Fouling resistance factors for shell and tube type heat exchangers shall
be in accordance with TEMA. Fouling resistance factors for plate and
frame type heat exchangers shall be 130% of TEMA. If seawater
cooling is to be used, an inlet design temperature of 35°C (95°F) shall
be used.

5.1.7 All electrical equipment and wiring shall be suitable for the specified
electrical area classification. All electrical arcing devices shall comply
with Division I of NFPA 70.
5.2 Compressors
5.4.3 For motor driven units, the motor nameplate rating (exclusive of
service factor) shall be a minimum of 110% of the greatest horsepower
(including gear and coupling losses) required for any of the specified
operating conditions and not less than 100% of the horsepower
required to bring the compressor train to normal speed within the
maximum safe allowable motor start time stipulated by the motor
Vendor when started under conditions specified by the Purchaser.
5.5 Gears
5.6 Chiller
5.6.1 The chiller shall be in accordance with the shell and tube heat
exchanger Data Sheet and Specification 32-SAMSS-007 except as
modified below.
5.6.2 Fixed tube sheets shall be applied for all services. The tubes shall not
protrude beyond the tube sheet. The channels and covers shall be
removable without removing any process piping. Clearance shall be
provided for tube or bundle pulling.

5.6.3 The chiller shall have flanged connections and shall be bolted to the
baseplate to facilitate removal for maintenance purposes.
5.7.4 The assembled bundle shall be nitrogen pressure tested. The bundle
shall be shipped with a positive charge of nitrogen.
The water cooled refrigerant condenser, when specified in the Purchase Order,
shall be in accordance with 32-SAMSS-007.

5.10.2 The main baseplate shall be of sturdy, open and flat construction with
full depth cross members and shall be suitably sized to accommodate
the specified refrigerant system. Layout shall provide adequate access
to all valves, instruments and equipment for both operation and
maintenance purposes, taking into account the space required for field-
mounted insulation. All welding shall be continuous.
5.10.3 Horizontal and vertical jackscrews shall be provided for the rotating
equipment and vertical jackscrews shall be provided for the sub-base
and the main baseplate for leveling purposes. Machined mounting
pads shall be extended for level indications.
5.10.4 One side of the equipment train shall be kept completely free of
obstructions for maintenance access. Equipment shall not extend
beyond edge of the baseplate. A clear space of 1 m (3.3 ft) minimum
shall be provided for access to rotating equipment bearings and seals.
Vertical access for equipment removal shall be provided.

5.11.4 Piping 1½ inch NPT and below shall have a minimum thickness of
schedule 80 and shall be joined by socket welding (except downstream
oil filters), butt welding or flanges.
5.11.8 Drains from the pumpdown unit and the main compressor casing shall
drain to a refrigerant recovery vessel. The tank shall be provided with
a heater and shall be connected to the compressor suction. The
connecting vapor piping shall include a bulls-eye sight glass and a
manually operated valve.
5.12.2 The unit controls shall consist of two separate, totally independent
systems; the normal operating control system and an emergency
shutdown (ESD) system. These systems shall be electronic, and shall
be suitable for integration with Buyer's remote central control room
DCS equipment. The ESD system will be provided by the Buyer.
5.12.3.1 The Vendor shall specify the control strategy, and shall
provide the Piping and Instrument Diagram (P&ID) to
define this strategy completely in accordance with the
relevant sections of ISA S5.1/5.2.
5.12.3.2 The Vendor shall furnish all control system input devices
such as sensors, transmitters, switches, etc. and all system
control devices such as control valves, solenoid valves,

5.12.3.5 Hot gas recycle flow shall be taken from the compressor
discharge upstream of the condenser and introduced into the
chiller beneath the refrigerant liquid level through control
of the recycle valve. A suitable diffuser shall be supplied to
distribute this gas stream into the liquid with minimum
turbulence.
5.12.4.2 The Vendor shall furnish all ESD system input devices such
as sensors, limit switches, vibration detectors, etc., and all
final control devices such as solenoid valves, relays, etc. in

5.12.4.3 The Vendor shall terminate all wiring in terminal boxes for
connection to the Buyer's ESD logic system.
5.12.6 Materials in contact with liquid refrigerant shall be suitable for the
lowest possible temperature at atmospheric pressure in the system.
5.13 Insulation
Insulation shall be provided but not installed before shipment. The Vendor shall
make provision on his equipment to permit the attachment of the thermal
insulation and shall provide an insulation schedule.

f) Storage rack for five 1000-kg (2205-lb) refrigerant drums mounted on the
bases and supported on the same level as the compressor skid.
g) Associated piping to charge the system with refrigerant.
h) Filter dryer.
6.1 General
6.1.1 Inspection and testing shall be in accordance with the referenced Form
175-313800, Centrifugal Fluorocarbon Refrigeration Units.
6.1.2 The Vendor shall notify all sub-vendors of the inspection requirements.
6.2 Inspection
6.2.2 All painting of pressure containing parts shall be deferred until the
specified inspection of such parts is completed.

c) When desiccant bags are provided, these shall be attached to the flange covers.
Calcium chloride shall not be used as a desiccant.
d) Alloy casings shall be provided with plugs of the same materials as the casings.
e) Refrigeration systems shall be nitrogen pressurized as specified above.
8 Vendor's Data
8.1 Proposals
The Vendor's proposal shall include the following material in addition to any
other material required in the Buyer's inquiry documentation:
a) Completed copies of Buyer's Data Sheet(s) with complete Vendor's
information entered.
b) Complete predicted performance curves showing discharge pressure and
gas power versus flow.
c) Preliminary pressure/enthalpy diagram for the refrigerant cycle.
d) Utility requirements such as steam, water, electricity and control air, plus
driver ratings. Approximate data shall be identified clearly as such.
e) Net and maximum operating (wet and dry) weights, maximum erection
weight with identification of the item, and maximum normal maintenance
weight with identification of the item, with this data stated individually
where separate shipments, packages or assemblies are involved.
f) Preliminary outline and arrangement drawings and schematic diagrams.
g) Typical cross-sectional drawings and literature to fully describe details of
the offering(s).
h) A specific statement that the system and all components are in strict
accordance with the Buyer's specifications. If not in strict accordance with
the specifications, the Vendor must include a specific list detailing and
explaining every deviation. Deviations may include alternative designs or
systems, equivalent to and guaranteed for the specific duties.
i) An explicit statement of any deviation(s) from the specified guarantee for
the specific duties.
j) A statement of the fixed number of weeks to effect shipment after receipt
of the order. Shipment shall be construed as ex-works, unless otherwise
specified by the Buyer. Separate times shall be stated for multiple
shipments as in the case of separate packages, assemblies, or several units.
k) A schedule for transmittal of contract data to be provided after order
placement.

8.2.1 All drawings, data and correspondence shall show the Purchase Order
number, Budget Item Number, Job Order number, unit tag number, job
title and location as a reference. Drawings and data shall be submitted
in accordance with the Purchase Order. Sectional arrangement
drawings shall include a comprehensive parts list.
8.2.2 A 3-D CAD model of the complete unit including piping conduit,
instruments, etc. shall be provided if specified on the Purchase Order.
8.2.3 The Vendor shall submit drawings and data for the Buyer's approval in
accordance with the Non-material Requirements and as stated in the
Purchase Order.
8.2.4 On each drawing, the Vendor shall leave sufficient space near
individual equipment items to allow the Buyer to add his tag numbers.
These tag numbers shall then be incorporated on the Vendor's original
drawings. These drawings shall be resubmitted for the Buyer's
approval.

later than the final issue of prints. It shall contain information such as
special alignment or grouting procedures, utility specifications
(including quantities) and all installation design data.
8.2.8 Operation and maintenance manuals shall be forwarded not later than 2
weeks after successful completion of all specified tests. They shall
include a section, if required, to cover special instructions at specified
extreme environmental conditions. The following shall also be
included in this manual:
