Renoir began his artistic career in a porcelain factory, where he painted designs on fine china. His strong
interest in the arts led him to enter the studio of a well-known instructor, and he focused on developing his
portrait and landscape painting skills. Renoir also met Claude Monet at the art studio and the two became
good friends. In the summer of 1869, the pair spent two months painting en plein air (outdoors) at La
Grenouillère, a beautiful lake resort outside Paris. They painted people taking part in all kinds of activities—
from swimming and boating to picnicking and sunbathing. Renoir learned about Impressionism from Monet
and enjoyed capturing the effects of light and shadow on the landscape in his own works of art. Renoir
also enjoyed making portraits and he had many patrons (clients) who hired him to paint their families. One
such patron was lady Madame Georges Charpentier, pictured here with her two children and the family dog.
Renoir used loose brushstrokes and bright colors to capture the family in their Japanese style living room.
Imagine that you are going to paint a family portrait; who would be in your portrait and why?
