Chemical Engineering is about changing raw materials into valuable products

that is used everyday. Chemical Engineers play key roles in industries, as
diverse as petroleum processing, pharmaceuticals manufacturing, food
processing, textiles, and chemicals. While developing the processes, Chemical
Engineers help to manage resources, protect the environment, and control
health and safety procedures.

The Department of Chemical Engineering has its roots in the Chemical

Technology course which was established in the Department of Chemistry in
1965. The first intake of students was in 1967 and the first group of graduates
emerged in 1971. In 1975 the course in Chemical Technology was renamed
Chemical Engineering and was placed under the wings of the Faculty of
Engineering.

The Department runs an eight semester (4 Years) undergraduate programme

in Chemical Engineering. The degree is recognized and accredited by BEM and
the Institution of Chemical Engineers (IChemE, UK). Current emphasis is
towards Outcome Based Education (OBE), with Problem Based Learning (PBL)
approach. The programme offered in the Department is Bachelor of
Engineering (Chemical Engineering). It is a 129 credit programme with 6
months compulsory industrial training.

The  Biomedical Engineering degree course was initiated in 1997 as a 4

year programme under the Dean's Department of the Faculty of Engineering
with an initial intake of 21 students with SPM (British 'O' Level equivalent)
qualifications. This 4 year programme was continued for 2 more intakes in
1998 and 1999.

In line with other public higher education institutions in Malaysia, the

programme was changed to a 5 year degree programme in 2000 with intakes
of students with SPM qualifications. During the same year, the programme was
granted departmental status with its own Head of Department and operating
budget.

With the introduction of the government matriculation programme for SPM

holders, we stopped our intake of students with SPM qualifications in 2002.
From 2002 onwards, we only accept STPM (British 'A' Level equivalent) and
Matriculation qualifications as the minimum qualifications for entry to our 4
year degree course.

Biomedical Engineering involves the application of the latest advances in

engineering and scientific knowledge for biomedical use. Our undergraduate
programme prepares students for positions in biomedical engineering
industries or to pursue advanced postgraduate studies.

We also offer Masters (by research) and PhD programmes for graduates in
Science and Engineering who wish to participate in post graduate research in
Biomedical Engineering. Starting from the 2006/2007 academic session, the
Biomedical Engineering Department will also be offering a Masters degree by
taught course.

Pharmacy
A four year Bachelor of Pharmacy [B. Pharm. (Hons)] course under semester
system is offered to Malaysian undergraduates. The undergraduate
programme consists of 44 core pharmacy modules under five disciplines,
Pharmaceutical Chemistry, Scientific Basis of Therapeutics, Pharmaceutical
Technology, Clinical Pharmacy and Pharmacy Practice.

Postgraduate programmes by research leading to MSc and PhD degrees are

offered to both qualified Malaysian and overseas students. The research
programmes encompass various areas of pharmaceutical sciences, including
medicinal chemistry, natural products chemistry, drug action, drug delivery,
pharmacoenconomics, pharmacoepidemiology and evidence based
pharmacotherapy related to clinical and pharmacy practice.

To support these activities, the department is equipped with state-of-the-art

research tools for biological chemistry, analytical chemistry and formulation
research such as a pharmaceutical pilot plant facility for scale up experimental
production of tablets and capsules, and microplate scintillation and
luminescence counter, cell harvester and robotic liquid handling system for
medium and high throughput biomolecular assays. These facilities are
supplemented through collaborative work with researchers in other
departments and faculties at the University of Malaya (UM), the Forest
Research Institute Malaysia (FRIM), the Forest Research Center (FRC),
Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM), Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM), and
the pharmaceutical industry.

The research projects conducted at the Department are largely funded by

grants from University of Malaya, the Intensification of Research in Priority
Areas (IRPA) and pharmaceutical companies. To date the Department has
successfully secured grants of more than RM 2 million from IRPA and other
sources for its projects.

A pharmacist is a “scientist and health professional who, by virtue of the

nature of the common graduation and registration requirements, is the only
specialist in drugs and medicine whose initial education and training provide
an understanding of the physical, chemical and biological properties of the
material used in medicinal products; the formulation, preparation and storage
of medicines, the use of medicines in disease state and prophylactic treatment,
together with their potentially harmful effects, their misuse and abuse ”.
A graduate in pharmacy will have developed an understanding of a complex
body of knowledge in the field of pharmacy, acquired commendable
communication ability, analytical acumen, problem solving skills and IT-
competency that can be applied in the various fields of employment, especially
within the area of pharmaceutical care, management and services.

Food Biotechnology is an international, peer-reviewed journal that is

focused on recent developments and applications of modern genetics as well
as enzyme, cell, tissue, and organ-based biological processes to produce and
improve foods, food ingredients, and functional foods.

Other areas of strong interest are fermentation to improve foods, food

ingredients, functional foods, and food waste remediation. In addition, articles
addressing the topics of modern molecular and biochemical approaches to
improving food safety are also published.
