Coursework 2

College success is defined as a personal goal that will prepare students for the career path in

the future. Two factors are contributing to a successful life in colleges are adopting the

growth mindset and having good social skills. After one year at the university, I realized my

student life was about to end. I did not want to regret not living my life to the fullest. It is

high time I set a specific goal to achieve success in university life.

Firstly, it is essential to develop a growth mindset. It is hard sometimes to find out the

motivation to push ourselves to work harder. As Hulleman and Harpel (2019) stated that

“Students constantly face obstacles and transitions, and their mindset influences how they

respond to them.” When having a positive attitude, we view our challenges as new

opportunities to improve our natural abilities. We learn to either love or hate the difficulties,

to embrace or dread mistakes. In the past, I used to think of the negative sides first when

coming to solving any problems. Then I ended up feeling guilty and depressed about the

situation “what if” or “why me”. Now that I realize everything happens for its reason, I do

not complain when bad things happen. There is an anonymous quote: “If it does not challenge

you, it will not change you”.

Another important component in college success is social skills. Social skills have grown

increasingly essential to academic talents in recent years, and they are directly linked to life

and work success (Gibb, 2014). These include the ability to speak up, be confident, and make

social connections. Growing up, I had been a child who always compressed my feeling, and

many times I came up with any amazing ideas, I would not speak up. Follow that, I was too

scared to come and make new friends unless they spoke to me first. This developed a lack of

confidence in me. At the university, I have to do many projects which require critical

thinking, team working and so on. One time I had an interview for a Teaching Assistant

position. At that time, I was doing that just to get some money to assist my finance. I

remembered the trainer told me, “I know a girl at your age, and I see so much potential

through her way of speaking”. Her chance of getting the job and promoting her abilities were

way much better than mine. Moreover, a good college student maintains a delicate balance

between academics and pleasure. Not only having social skills helps me with my academic

performance, but also with my quality time having with my peers. Making more friends at the

university, I feel like I am having memorable times at college. We also assist each other in

many aspects of life.

Through what I learned about the key elements influencing college academic success, I set a

goal and direction for my future career. I take small steps. First, I learn to adjust to university

life and set a timetable every day. I read a book by Carol S. Dweck named “The New

Psychology of Success” to achieve a growth mindset. Second is, I joined voluntary clubs,

tried to take part in as many activities as possible. In this way, I can meet different kinds of

people and learn from them. I also plan to start a past-time job in a workshop to enhance my

knowledge, and to take a step further in the working industry.

Many diverse life events have shaped a portion of who I am as a person. And meeting

people at the college helps me learn new things. And by discovering factors in the success of

college students, I would have a clear path for my future. Although it is not very visible or

specific, I know what it likes to be a grown-up and take things seriously. That, in the

demanding world, there‘s a lot to learn to finally get the perfect of myself.
