Bheeshma-Stuthi

(Bhagavatha Purana : 1 : 9 : 32- 43)

Bheeshma in praise of the omnipresent

Sloka 32

Ithi-mathi-r-upakalpithaa vi-trishnaa
Bhagavathi saatuta-pungavae vibhoomni
Swa-sukham-upagathae kwachith-vikarthum
prak’rthim-upaeushi yath bhava-pravaahah

Thus my mind
free of desires and distractions
is now fixed in
the one who is the unadulterated pure bliss ,
but
who as an amusement
like an illusion
takes on a form as if in creation
and
appears as if a distinguised one of the yadu clan

Tri-bhuvan-kamanam tamaala-varnam
ravi-kara-goura-vara-ambaram dadhaanae
vapu-r-alaka-kula-avr’tha-aanana-abjam
‘vijaya-sakhae’-rathi-r-astu mae-anavadyaa

May i have unadulterated love towards

Krishna , friend of Arjuna

the one with the most beautiful form in the three worlds
with deep blue colour
with dress the colour of the rays of the sun
and
with face with the beauty of a lotus , covered with strands of curly hair above
34

kkacha-lulitha-shrama-vaari-alan-krtha-asyae

tuachi vilasath kavchae-astu krishna aatmaa

May my mind be fixed in

Krishna
who in the battle field
had his face encirled with hair moving in the wind
moist with sweat
and
brown from the dust raised by the horses

with shield dazzling

and
skin torn from my sharp arrows

35
Sapadi sakhi-vacha-o nishamya madhyae

May i have great love towards

Arjuna’s friend , Krishna,

who
placed the chariot in-between the two armies
and
standing there ,
stole the longivity of life of the enemy with a mere gaze with his eyes
(and bestowed ultimate victory to Arjuna then itself )
36
Vyavahitha-pr’than-aamukham nireekshya
Swa-jana-vadaath-vimukhasya doesha-bhudhyaa

s-charana-rathih param-asya tasya mae-astu

towards him
who through the knowledge of the self
freed Arjuna,

reluctant to fight the battle

after viewing the armies and his relatives and teachers

from the illusions of sin

37

Dhr’tha-rat’tha-charana-o abhyaath-chalathgu-r-
hari-r-iva hanthum-ibham gatha-o-uthareeyaha

Seated in his chariot ,

he jumped down in to battle field, shaking the earth around,
with his weapon in hand and his dress flying off his shoulder
like a lion bent on killing an elephant

breaking his own promise (that he would not use a weapon in the battle )
to protect the words of his devotee (that he-Bheeshma-would see to that he does take a weapon)

38
Shitha-vishikha-hatha-o visheerna-damshah
Kshatha-ja-pari-plutha Aathathaayina-o mae
Pra-sabham-abhi-sasaara mad-vada-art’tham
Sa bhavatu mae Bhagavaan gathi-r-mukundhaha

May he
hurt with the sharp and pointed arrows ,
with shattered shield and covered with blood

who
forced himself against me as if to kill me armed with weapon i

be my refuge

39
Vijaya-rat’tha-kudumba aat’tha-thoethrae
Dr’tha-haya-rashmini tath-shree-eekshaneeyae

have great love toward s him
whose great beauty enchants the whole world
and
who is with arjuna s chariot and with reins of the horses and whip in hand

Those who have died seeing him

have attained him
and
the ultimate bliss which is his form

who reciprocated with graceful movements,
beautiful smile
and love filled gaze

and
who who mimicked his acts because o their blind love for him
have been able to attain that bliss

This one
with beauty that enchanted every one s heart
and
worshipped by the great knowledgeable ones
in the gathering of Yudhishtra’s raaja-sooya
has now manifested before my eyes

42
Tam-imam-aham-ajam shareer-bhaajaam
hr’di hr’di dhishtitham-aatma-kalpithaanaam

The one who has manifested among the Kuru-clan

to destroy the great burden of the earth
invented the game of “charthu-r-anga ”
like a fire blown in the wind which destroyed the Kauravaa s

Having placed him ,

who frees the devotee from sorrows ,
firmly in my heart
I am leaving this nest which is my physical body
