The main objective of the visit is to observe the process of the production and the
different stages of the process.
The first place was a storage compartment where all the tree barks and stored on top of
each and were stacked.
The second process was the cutting of the tree trunks into various sizes depending on the
manufacturing products either door, window, box, table, chairs, etc.
The next stage was like a boiler place where the wood are heated up with certain
temperature to get out any excess water or any unwanted liquid or bacteria.
The plywood process is there the thin wood slabs are glued together and are pressed by a
heated hydrochloric press for a few minutes to make sure they stick together.

Production process
Selection of Log
The first step is the selection of a good log from selected tree wood according to the
demand of the type of plywood to be manufactured. This log is known as peeler. Peeler is
straight and has a good diameter as large number of layers are expected to make from it.
Layer Formation
The large blade is used for the processing of thin layers inside sawmill and made sheets
of veneers. A horizontal placement of log under blade is maintained to get a better result.
Continuously blade is pressed and several layers are cut into pieces.
Exposure to Heat
The sheets are then exposed to heat for removing water content from those. An good
dehydration of sheets is confirmed before next step.
Gluing
After drying the sheets those are glued together maintaining the system of a different type
of plywood. In this step, caution is maintained to get the best result. After patching and
grading this gluing takes place.
Baking
The glued plywood primary sheets are sent for baking and pressing at required
temperature and pressure. The minimum temperature is 140 degree Celsius and pressure
is 1.9 Mega Pascal.
Finishing
Finally, defects of manufactured plywood sheets are solved. Holes, pits or any unfinished
edges are given finishing. Also resizing, reshaping takes place.

Group observation
KSFIC is the authorised logging agency for the Karnataka Forest Department. Logging
is taken up in forest areas as per the Govt of India approved Working Plans. After enumeration
of the trees to be harvested, the coupe is handed over by the Forest Department to KSFIC for
logging. Systematic logging work is taken up and the work is generally completed in about 3 – 4
months’ time. Pulp wood from the coupes is procured by KSFIC on the royalty rates determined
by Govt of Karnataka and further traded to paper industries. Similarly, firewood required for
retail sale depots is procure on royalty basis and sold. Secondary (plantation) timber and billets
are procured, converted to sizes, treated, seasoned and used in manufacture of block boards,
panels, furniture etc. Remaining materials including logs is delivered to the designated depots of
the Forest Department for eventual e-auction.
CSR Activities
Since the IV’s are planned in various sectors, students find it easy to select relevant
organizations for their assignments.
Using the case study approach within the visit to bring out critical thinking among
students.
