(Analytical Exposition Text )

For many students, exams seem a necessary evil. Time-consuming yet inevitable. But are exams
really necessary?(clue for answer no 1) In 2011, Macquarie University was the first Australian
university to debate the abolition of exams. No exams in any subject, at any year level. At the time it
was suggested that exams fail to develop “questioning, self-sufficient learners”. Critics also often
argue that they promote a superficial understanding of topics, and that they are inauthentic. That is,
they fail to represent the kinds of things students will be asked to do “in the real world”.
However, this is taking a narrow view of the benefits of exams. Exams include many of the
aspects we want from assessment (clue for answer no 3). Good assessment programs aim to provide
a balanced, fair evaluation of each student. They achieve this in two ways. First, they use of a variety
of strategies and task. This gives students multiple opportunities, in varying contexts, to
demonstrate what they know and can do. It also enables teachers to be confident in the accuracy of
their judgments about each student. Second, task must be fit for purpose. Each task should be
appropriate to the specific goals it is assessing.

Chinese Botanist Builds ‘Bank’ For Desert Plants
In 1972, Researchers started domesticating drought-resistant plants for desert control at a people’s
commune in Turpan, a city along the ancient Silk Road, China. At that time, the commune was
plagued by frequent gales blown from the sandy land to its west. Local residents hoped the
researchers could help them shake off the fear of the sands.
Life in Turpan was harsh. Researchers lived in cave houses with windows made of plastic. In
the winter, heavy winds would tear apart the windows leaving dust and sand everywhere. Food
supplies were also scarce. Researchers’ regular diet included steamed cakes of sorghum, green
turnips and onions. They had to bicycle to the county seat to buy daily necessities such as meat,
sugar, and soap with ration coupons.
Despite the difficulties, the researchers worked hard and successfully introduced a dozen
drought-resistant plants, which are adaptable to local climate and soil conditions. After sapling
