Control Charts

Nov 2020

Nitin is making use of Control Charts to monitor the thickness and diameter of the pipes. Samples of
pipes are taken every 30 minutes and the thickness of the pipe is measured at 4 places, denoted by
A, B, C and D. The tolerance is + or – 0.5 mm and the standard thickness is 5.0 mm. The readings
over an 8-hour period are indicated in the table below.

(i) Calculate the Central line, upper control limit and lower control limit. (3 marks)
(ii) Draw a control chart. (6 marks)
(iii) Is the system under control? Explain your answer. (2 marks)

(c) In a shaft manufacturing firm samples of shaft are taken every 30
minutes and the diameter of the shaft is measured at 4 places
denoted by A, B, C and D.
The tolerance is + or – 0.5 mm and the standard diameter is 5.0 mm.
The readings over an 8 hr period are indicated in the table below.

(i)Calculate the Central line, upper control limit and lower control limit. (6 marks)
(ii) Draw a control chart. (5 marks)
