Qualitative vs. Quantitative

Identify Data Types


Suppose that you are a biologist studying elephants in their natural habitat in Africa. You
observe their behaviours and interaction, and take photographs of their interactions to
study later. Examine the photograph of the elephants shown above.

1. Analyse Give two examples of qualitative data that could be obtained from the
photograph of the elephants.
- Elephants vary in size
- Elephants are grey in colour

2. Analyse Give two examples of quantitative data that could be obtained from the
photograph of the elephants.
- 6 elephants can be seen in the group
- Most elephants have two tusks
Qualitative vs. Quantitative Sorting Activity
1. Decide whether the data below is qualitative or quantitative.
2. Type a QL for qualitative or QT for quantitative in the box.

 The gummy worm increased by 2 inches.
