About the New Work Department

The National Theatre’s New Work Department is housed in the National Theatre Studio and is the
engine room for developing work towards production for all the National Theatre’s stages. The New
Work Department team oversees a slate of commissioned plays and process-led work, focussing its
capacity and resources on bringing them to fruition. It receives unsolicited script submissions year
round, holds commissioning and dramaturgy, runs the Staff Director programme, devises courses and
other opportunities for talent development and training, manages the Writers and Artists on
Attachment, and Writer in Residence.

Contract Type: 18 Month fixed term contract

Hours: 35 hours per week


The post holder will be scheduled on a rota with hours, either 8.30 to 4.30 or 11.00
to 7.00 (12pm-8pm on a Friday)
Additional hours may be necessary in order to fulfil the post’s requirements.

Salary: £22,500 annually

We are looking for someone with an all-round knowledge of working in a theatre development
space, with duties ranging from administration, production and technical, operations and artist
facing. It will give the post holder a broad spectrum of skills and experiences with which to
build their future career in the arts. Studio Manager

Duties and Responsibilities


Job Description New Work Assistant

1. To provide a warm welcome & support to all users of the NT Studio, stationed for part of the day
at the front desk.
2. To co-ordinate the shared administration related to the New Work department activities through:
expenditure, including coding & inputting invoices, reconciling credit card payments, liaising with
artists, agents and providers to process payments in a timely manner. First point of contact for
financial queries.
3. Assisting the Production & Technical Manager with liaising, organising, preparing and
overseeing the workshop spaces for incoming artists, including coordinating regularly with other
NT departments. Creating a safe and comfortable environment for everyone.
4. To be jointly responsible for officially opening up the building to the public each morning &
closing down each evening, making sure the desk has presence from 9am-6.30pm (and 8pm on
Fridays). To be first responder for health and safety, and security matters.
5. Collecting and returning resources from the NT props and costume stores, and running errands
to the main NT building on a regular basis
6. To support the preparation and compilation of show invitations digest for the weekly shows
meeting, responding and logging external correspondence via the generic departmental inboxes.
Arranging meetings in response to enquiries where appropriate.
7. Handling external and internal enquiries via email or on the telephone & ensuring the smooth
flow of information throughout the department, this will involve collecting post, booking theatre
tickets, travel and accommodation, script printing and photocopying, booking taxis and transport
as necessary. Responsible for the collection of personal data for freelancers in a secure and
accurate manner.
8. Supporting the New Work Project Manager and Production & Technical Manager and team by
carrying out any other duties as reasonably requested.
9. Supporting the National Theatre’s communications objectives by sharing information with your
manager and colleagues as appropriate, whilst respecting confidentiality, so that you and your
colleagues have all the information you need to perform your duties effectively.
10. Complying with the National’s Equal Opportunities and Health and Safety policies at all times.

Person Specification
1. Experience of being a central point of welcome and support; it is of the utmost importance that the
candidate is warm, efficient and adaptable.
2. An able team player who has experience of multiple work flows and managing their time.
3. A basic experience of production, stage management and technical theatre, especially sound and
video as the post holder will be required to set up technical equipment for workshops, readings
and explorative environments.
4. Good administrative and IT skills with the ability to deliver work accurately and with great attention
to detail, continually respecting confidentiality and discretion,
5. The confidence and ability to communicate and work with people from a wide
range of backgrounds and skills, with a welcoming, supportive and
enthusiastic attitude.

6. A passion for learning about theatre in all its many forms and a proven interest in the arts.
