TASK 12 - PAGES 131-132 (BSA 1C_AGUSTINA CORDERO)

1. In Excerpt 1, what impression of the Filipinos do you get from reading Morga’s description of
the type of food the natives eat? Which phrase gives you this impression?

According to Morga's depiction, Filipino culinary preferences are unusual because "they
incline toward meat and fish, saltfish that start to decompose and smell." It may be unusual from
the perspective of another country, but this is because Filipinos are resourceful and will, in
general, make use of what is available to them.

2. What is Rizal's purpose in writing an annotation about the food preferences of the English,
Spaniards, and Chinese?

Rizal's motivation is to point out that different types of culinary preferences exist in each
culture. It is determined by their assets and, of course, their culture. Some individuals enjoy what
the English eat, while others dislike what people from other countries eat. It is essentially stated
that what is unusual for one person may simply be normal for another.

3. In Excerpt 2, how did Morga portray the Filipinos?

Given Morga, Filipinos frequently build barriers between themselves and those who are
more grounded than them, which they can't overcome. They will generally isolate themselves
from people who are dissimilar to them and may harm or impact their lives because it is what
they believe is acceptable for them.

4. In Rizal’s subsequent annotation, what does he mean when he says, “Perhaps for the same
reason, other nations have great esteem for the lion and bear, putting them on their shields and
giving them honorable epithets”?
Rizal argues that the reason lions and bears are used as security guards by various
countries is that they discovered that they were superior to them, which is why they are used and
acknowledged for security purposes.

5. In general, what is Rizal’s motive in writing his annotations of Morga’s work/ how does this
fit into the aims of other propagandists working for reforms during this time?

Rizal's thought process is to help others understand the differences across countries,
which can be caused by certain conditions. He will generally modify the perspective of the
perusers so that they will acknowledge him. This aligns with the points of other disseminators
working for changes at this time because folks these days just look at one point of view, the
disseminators are the ones who appear to them all parts of the narrative for better arrangement
and adjustment their point of view.
