Copywriting tips and extending your

portfolio
Copywriting is essentially what is selling products or services, whether in the offline or the
online world. Want to give it a try? Here are some tips. Also, are you looking to extend your
portfolio by taking advantage of every skill that you have? I am here to help you.

Tip 1: Research combined with the action-oriented task.

If you would like to enter the world of copywriting and advertising, consider research as your
tool, just like how a pickaxe is to a miner. Research, research and research. Get to know about
the product or service inside out, and increase the possibilities of writing in different ways.

After researching, you have already posed a question/problem to the customer. Now, it is your
chance to convert this information into the customer carrying out an action-oriented task. To be
able to convert such elements, you will need to start with a problem, move on to a promise (with
proof — that being testimonials or reviews).

Tip 2: Be concise and convincing

Using fancy words might seem like the norm. Yes, I do understand that one should try to expand
his/her vocabulary and improve their grammar skills, but in the field of copywriting, conveying
the message is what matters most. Try to be as concise as you can so that the customer is left
with a smile on their face rather than scratching their head.

Try to use vocabulary which inspires and sparks joy or promotes power. This kind of vocabulary
is more likely to grab the customer's attention. Brainstorm in every way possible to make your
message stand out within a thousand of messages in the same field as yours.

Tip 3: Refine that heading

What grabs our attention while reading a newspaper? What grabs our attention while surfing the
Internet for an article? What grabs our attention while watching the news on the television? It's
the heading/headline. I would suggest that while writing, you keep this as last. This was not only
the technique that was adopted by me, but rather by my first employer too.
Wondering why? This is done so that you can decide what is the best fit for your content. It
should be eye-catching and related to the content because it is the first thing that a customer puts
their eyes on. Try to have about 2-3 headlines to then decide on the best one with your
employer/peers.

Tip 4: Consider imprinting a story in the reader's mind

What has been that one thing that was persistent throughout the generations to come? Stories.
Stories were spread verbally, and then, later on, written to be told further on.

Treat your customers like family members, and one way to have them grasp why your business
exists or what your business goals are is to tell them a story. Make sure that your story flows and
you are including quotes that are relevant to your storytelling process.

Tip 5: Illustrate your content with the right pictures/Use

these tools to enhance your writing
They say that the perfect writer creates the right pictures in the readers’ minds, but on the other
hand, it is true that ‘a picture is worth a thousand words.’ The existence of the saying came
around the early 20th century, but it still holds in the 21st century. The human brain grasps
content, concepts or messages much faster if it contains visuals, in the form of images or videos.
Images grab attention and that is what your initial goal should be, grabbing your customer’s
attention.

Now, you may be wondering why I cannot find the right picture for my content. How do I find
one (without feeling the need to have crazy artistic skills)? Well, you do not have to be artistic to
take pictures or create art, because people love consuming custom media. If you are still worried,
try utilizing your network (including your close friends) to have custom media made.

A perfect example would be this Side Hustler’s blog that accommodates the right pictures with
the right words, and which is run by an online friend, Mart.

Furthermore, I tend to use tools like Grammarly, Canva and Thesaurus.com’s writing tool. I
know, I know, Grammarly was advertised on every YouTuber’s channel at some point, but it
helps a lot in delivering the message. Canva is a platform for users who would like to do basic
editing without knowing all the nitty-gritty details of Adobe Photoshop or some other
complicated software, which can be time-consuming. Finally, as individuals who want to write,
we all know the struggle of using the same words all over again and having to scratch our heads
when trying to find a synonym for a word; you need not worry, head over to Thesaurus.com's
writing tool.

Bonus: Prosper using all your skills

There will be days when you will be free and you will be left to think about what you can do to
make use of that time, and that too efficiently. So, let me ask you that after reading this blog post,
you will grab a piece of paper and get down to action to list all the skills that you possess which
can turn into passive income or something you can offer to other individuals or groups while
enjoying the comfort of your home. I know it will take some time to brainstorm all possibilities,
but let me give you some examples. I initially started with just administrating eSports events but
then I had the idea of offering copywriting, and then to extend to thesis proofreading. So, if you
play games, you should look for opportunities where you can gain some experience (or even
earn, in some cases), or if you like creating graphics, you should look for opportunities where
people need such graphic content for their channels or album covers.

Lastly, Thanks Mart for giving me the chance to write a guest blog for Side Hustlers. It was an
honor to have this platform and to share my ideas and experiences.
