Data Collection
For Crops
Tips For Data Collection

• As many samples as possible

• As much (spatially) distributed as possible- maximum area under crop
• Samples covering all growth stages
• Samples from each and every class present in the region of interest.
For example-
If Rice is major crop widely cultivated over the particular region, then maximum samples of rice
should be collected followed by other crops in the region.
• data should be collected during the growing period (i.e. when the crop can be seen already on the
ground).
How to Mark Plots
• Only one type of crop in polygon, if possible in the same growing stage
How to Mark Plots
• No buildings/houses/roads/water/field boundary inside polygon
How to Mark Plots
• Polygon does not need to match the field boundary, can be smaller (even just marking the middle of the
field in extreme cases)
How to Mark Plots
• Polygons of the plots should not intersect or overlap with other plots (Cultivated/ Fallow/ Barren)
Data Collection
Fallow land
Identification of Fallow Land
• The land is left fallow or uncultivated for certain period of time. This is to facilitate the soil to gain
back or replenish itself the lost nutrients. The land that is ploughed and tilled but left unseeded
during a growing season.

Barren land

Cultivated

Fallow
Fallow
How to Mark Fallow Land
• Fallow plot should not coincide with other cultivated plots.
How to Mark Fallow Land
• Fallow plot should not intersect/ overlap with adjacent fallow plots/ cultivated plots/ bare soil.
Data Collection
Barren Land/Bare Soil
Identification of Barren Land
A Land/ soil which is too poor to produce much or any vegetation Barren lands include deserts, dry
salt flats, beaches, sand dunes, exposed rock, strip mines, quarries, and gravel pits.

Fallow Barren Land

Fallow
Difference Between Bare Land and Fallow Land
• Fallow land is a ploughed soil which can differ with soil color (red, black, brown, etc.) while bare land is
an un-ploughed soil with dry empty areas.

Bare

Fallow

Fallow
How to Mark Barren Land
• Barren land is usually found outside village/ city. Small polygons should be marked on plane dry land
(bare land).

Grassland
Identification of Grassland
Grassland is an area in which the vegetation is dominated by a nearly continuous cover of grasses,
especially one used for grazing. It may consist of scattered grasses, wild grasses or some trees.

How to Mark Grassland
• Grassland is usually found outside village/ city, near hills or river. Small polygons should be marked from
several locations of grassland.

Remember….

• Crop identification should be correct.

• Overlapping and intersections while marking plots should be avoided.
• Too small water bodies (wells, bore wells, small ponds) should be avoided.
• Sample targets would be given according to requirements.
