CABLE AVOIDANCE TOOL (C.A.

T) AND GENNY
TRAINING

Buried services signify a major hazard to construction workers in the Oman and the world over. Excavations which

have been poorly planned and prepared for can cause cable or pipe damage leading to expensive repairs, project

delays and most crucially, personal injury. The CAT, or Cable Avoidance Tool, is used to locate these services so

that they can be avoided. The CAT can detect signals naturally radiating from metallic services or in conjunction with

a Genny that applies a distinctive signal that the CAT can detect. The CAT can be used in 3 modes: Power (P), Radio

(R) and Genny (G) and can detect the vast majority of buried cables and conductors (though not all, such as plastic

pipe which isn’t equipped with Flexi-trace).

Knowing how to use these tools correctly is imperative in their successful use. SCS Health and Safety with our

training partner offer a CAT and Genny training course which properly prepares candidates to use the equipment,

providing them with the essential knowledge needed to safely and correctly operate them when tracing underground

services. The course is designed to fully meet the guidance from HSG 47 for Avoiding Danger from Underground

Services.

What does the course involve?

Delegates will receive hands-on training using the actual locators to detect and trace the route of buried services.

This will cover the different types of buried services that exist, current legislation and best practice concerning

detecting buried services, the safety implications of not using a locator and associated ancillary equipment, use of

local utility plans, observation of evidence in the street etc.

Outcomes

An APT Health & Safety Training Certificate awarded on successful completion of the course
Course Overview

Here is a summary of what the cable avoidance tool training covers:

• Identification of Underground Services and Common Marking

• Legislation, Regulations and Best Practice with respect to Detecting and Tracing Underground Services

• Reasons for using Locators

• Hazards arising from the use of Cable Avoidance Tools and Signal Generators and precautions which
should be observed

• Identification of types and limitations of Cable Avoidance Tools and Signal Generators

• Implications of Damage, Handling and Transporting of Equipment

• Inspecting, Calibration and Testing of Equipment

• The methods of safe use of Pipe and Cable Location Equipment, along with basic locating techniques

• Practical session where each candidate will be instructed and assessed on their ability and competence in
using the CAT & Genny in the local area

Who is the course for?

Delegates with no previous experience although some practical experience of groundwork and excavations would be

beneficial.

Since the safe use of this equipment requires that candidates consult safety notices and are required to reference a

manufacturer’s instruction manual, literacy and language comprehension are important requirements for any user.

Note: If candidates have any problems with literacy or language comprehension, or have any doubts about their

fitness to undertake the course, they should bring their concerns to the attention of their employer.
