Pre Calculus

What is Calculus?
Calculus, known in its early history as infinitesmal calculus, is a mathematical
discipline focused on limits, continuity, derivatives, inegrals, and infinite series.

Who Invented Calculus?

Isaac Newton and Gottfried Leibniz

Major Branches of Calculus

Differential Calculus

Determines the rate of change of a quantity

Integral Calculus
Finds the quantity where the rate of change is known

Some Applications of Calculus

Engineering Astronomy

Architecture Graphic Design

Biology Etc.

Computer Science

Pre-Calculus
Analytic Geometry

Differential Calculus

Integral Calculus

Analytic Geometry
Chapter 1 Points in a Plane
The study of geometry of figures by algebraic representation and manipulation of
equations describing their positions, configurations

History
Introduced in the 1630's
-Rene Descartes 15961650 and Pierre De Fermat

Pre Calculus 1
This chapter introduces the basic properties of the most fundamental tool of
analytic geometry

Abscissa- XAxis Ordinate- YAxis

Quadrant 1 (+ +) Quadrant 3 (- -)
Quadrant 2 (- +) Quadrant 4 (+ -)

Distance Between Two Points

The distance between two points A X1,Y1 and B X2,Y2

X= X2X1

YY2Y1
Midpoint- is halfway between the two endpoints

Sketching the Graph on an Equation

 Choose some values for either variables and substitute these values in the
equation

 Set up the table of values

 Plot the points and graph

Intercepts of the Graph

What is an Intercept?

When the line crosses the x-axis

When the line crosses the y-axis

Finding the x and y intercepts:

Let x=0, this is the x-intercept

Let y=0, this is the y-intercept

Symmetry about an Axis

Symmetry- the quality of being made up of exactly similar parts facing each
other or around an axis
Three Types of Symmetry:

A graph of an equation can be symmetric with respect to:

 XAxis Symmetry- a graph is said to be symmetric with respect to the x-axis

if for every point (x,y) on the graph, the point (-x,y) is also on the graph

 YAxis Symmetry- a graph is said to be symmetric with respect to the y-axis

if for every point (x,y) on the graph, the point (x,-y) is also on the graph

 Origin Symmetry- a graph is said to be symmetric with respect to the origin

if for every point (x,y) on the graph, the point (-x,-y) is also on the graph

Pre Calculus 2
Asymptote of the Curve

Asymptote- is a line for curve the describes the behavior of a graph

Types of Asymptote:

 Horizontal

 Vertical

 Oblique/Slant
