1. Change the newspaper headlines into full sentences e.g. A storm hits the east
coast.
2. In groups of three or four select one headline and fill in the following table to say
what must have happened. Tell the class the stories you have imagined.

B. With the help of your teacher, in pairs, look at a newspaper and see how the
newspaper is formatted (arranged).
These questions will help you.
1. What is on the first page? Why is the first page important?
On page 1 can you find the news in brief? Does it have the weather report?
Read at least one important headline that you find interesting.

2. What do these words mean?


i) by-line ii) editorial iii) reported article iv) feature
Can you find each of these in the newspaper?

3. What is the difference between a newspaper, a tabloid and a supplement? Name


some of the popular ones in each category.

4. Find:
i) letters to the editor ii) a thought for the day
iii) the weather report iv) a page 3 article
v) thesensex vi) sports news

Some questions for discussion:

1. What’s in the news today?


2. Why do you find this item of news most interesting?
3. Give a summary of the news item to the class. You can work in pairs or in groups
of 3 to 4 students.
4. What type of news do you find most interesting and why?

1. Name programmes of each type that you have seen on TV.

4. What is your favourite programme?

C. Activity 1:
Form groups of three or four students. Take up different roles and report it to the
anchor of the TV programme e.g.

Situation: There has been an earthquake in the hilly parts of the country. One
person is a photographer, one person is the cub reporter, one person is paparazzi
following a movie star and one person is an anchor in the studio.

Act out this scene in the class. You can take positions anywhere in the class.

Other situations can be:

1. An anchor is interviewing the stars of a movie about to be released.


2. Any political scam.
3. Leakage of examination papers.
4. A plane crash.
5. Establishment of a new school.
6. A politician who has just been elected / arrested.
7. A fire in a hospital.
8. A situation of your choice.

2. Speaking Activity:

1. Which clip / scene from a film would you never tire of seeing?
2. What trailers have you seen recently that made you go and see the film? Did
the viewing make it worthwhile?
3. Can you think of scenes from a film that should have been cut? Why?
4. Which of the feature do you, in general, like a film to have? Name the film in
for each of the following.
a) a happy ending. b) lots of action. c) a political or social message.
d) totally naturalistic dialogues. e) longsequences of natural beauty.
f) larger than lifeortrue to life characters.
5. Review a film you have seen recently. Remember to include acting skills, set
design, dialogue, music and any other point that you would like to include.
