Cross Multiplication Method

Let us solve the following system of equations

𝑎 𝑥+𝑏 𝑦+𝑐 =0 (1)

𝑎 𝑥+𝑏 𝑦+𝑐 =0 (2)

Multiplying equation (1) by b2 and equation (2) by b1, we get

𝑎 𝑏 𝑥+𝑏 𝑏 𝑦+𝑏 𝑐 =0 (3)

𝑎 𝑏 𝑥+𝑏 𝑏 𝑦+𝑏 𝑐 =0 (4)

Cross Multiplication Method
Subtracting equation (4) from equation (3), we get
𝑎 𝑏 −𝑎 𝑏 𝑥+ 𝑏 𝑐 −𝑏 𝑐 =0
⇒𝑥=

𝑎 𝑏 −𝑎 𝑏 ≠0

Similarly, 𝑦 =

These values of x and y can also be written as

= =
Finding Integral Solution for Indeterminate Equations

If the number of unknown quantities is greater than the number of independent

equations, there will be an unlimited number of solutions, and the equations are
said to be indeterminate.
Cross Multiplication Method

E.g. Solve using cross multiplication method : 3𝑥 + 2𝑦 + 25 = 0 and 𝑥 + 𝑦 +

15 = 0
E.g. Solve 7𝑥 + 12𝑦 = 220 in positive integers.
E.g. Find the number of positive integral solution of 14𝑥 − 11𝑦 = 29.
E.g. In how many ways can Rs.5 be paid in denomination of 25 paise and 10
paise?
E.g. A person spends Rs. 461 in buying horses and cows, if each horse costs Rs. 23
and each cow costs Rs. 16, how many of each does he buy?
E.g. Divide 81 into two parts so that one may be a multiple of 8 and the other of
5.
E.g. Divide 136 into two parts so that one of which when divided by 5 leaves
remainder 2, and the other divided by 8 leaves remainder 3.
Miscellaneous Equations

E.g. Solve 𝑥 − 7𝑎𝑥 + 10𝑎 − 𝑥 + 𝑎𝑥 − 6𝑎 = 𝑥 − 2𝑎
Miscellaneous Equations

E.g. Solve 3𝑥 − 4𝑥 + 34 + 3𝑥 − 4𝑥 − 11 = 9
Miscellaneous Equations

E.g. Solve 12𝑥 − 56𝑥 + 89𝑥 − 56𝑥 + 12 = 0

Miscellaneous Equations

E.g. Solve 𝑥 + 2 + 𝑦 + 3 + 𝑥 + 2 𝑦 + 3 = 39

𝑥+2 + 𝑦+3 + 𝑥 + 2 𝑦 + 3 = 741

Miscellaneous Equations

E.g. Solve 𝑥 + 𝑦 = 82
x−y=2
Miscellaneous Equations

E.g. Solve 4𝑥 + 3𝑥 𝑦 + 𝑦 = 8
2𝑥 − 2𝑥 𝑦 + 𝑥𝑦 = 1
Miscellaneous Equations

E.g. Solve 𝑥 + 𝑦 + 𝑧 = 13.

𝑥 + 𝑦 + 𝑧 = 65

𝑥𝑦 = 10
Miscellaneous Equations

E.g. Solve 𝑦 − 𝑥 + 𝑧 𝑦 − 𝑥 = 30.

𝑧 + 𝑧𝑥 + 𝑥 = 19

𝑥 + 𝑥𝑦 + 𝑦 = 39
