India draws millions of tourists every year as the ‘AtithiDevoBhava’ conviction that means

Guest is God exemplifies India’s history of providing its hospitality services at its finest by
accommodating the guests. That would be the reason why the industry contributed around
9% of the India’s GDP. That would be the reason why the industry contributed about 9% of
India's GDP. In the current situation where Covid-19 was announced as a pandemic by the
World Health Organization, the Government of India announced a complete lockdown of
the nation that had a strong impact on the economy, mainly the tourism and hospitality
industry, which is unable to open even after the lockdown.

In India, Travel and Tourism industry has been a significant contributor to the country’s
GDP. Even this sector generate a large scale of employment base. The Covid-19 pandemic
has severely impacted the tourism industry across all over world covering sectors like
hospitality, tour operators, travel agents, air, land and sea transportation industry and
others.

The travel industry, which includes airlines, hotels and restaurants, will shrink by 50% in
2020, which would mean a significant loss of jobs and revenue. According to the
International Air Transport Association (IATA), Airlines worldwide are expected to lose a
record of $84 billion in 2020, more than three times the loss made during the Global
Financial Crisis (The World Economic Forum, 2020). Most of the airlines are
undergrounded. Hotels are being shut down due to fewer tourists and many hotels turning
into quarantine facilities. Most restaurateurs see operating costs rising further because of
social distancing, hygiene, and sanitation-related costs. Therefore, sustaining during this
crisis is a challenging task for the tourism industry.

Role of travel & tourism in India:

One of the phrases which signifies the actual meaning of Travel is:

more getting the Knowledge. Tourism has great importance is economical as well as
cultural development of India. It promotes the different destination with its heritage,
culture, food and aware us about its beauty which we have lost in our daily routine life.
Tourism is the booming sector as well as large sector throughout the world.

 In 2018, travel and the travel industry contributed 9.2% in India's GDP and
produced 26.7 million positions in that year. This industry also solve earning
problem and provide jobs to the people in different sectors.
 The travel industry area represents 12.75% of work in India, 5.56% of it is direct
and 7.19% in indirect way. According to annual report for 2019-20 the Ministry of
 Tourism (MOT), in India over 87 million people were employed in the Travel Sector
in 2018-19
 As per the figure in India branded and organized hotels annual revenue is INR
38,000 crore ($5 billion).
 Hospitality industry’s turnover is approx. INR 4 lakh crore ($53 billion). One of the
Important thing about this industry is it provides direct employment to more than 7
million people.
 India’s air transport industry employs over 400,000 people directly and 940,000 are
employed in related supply chains.

Effect of corona virus on Travel and Tourism in India

 Due to Covid, the Indian Tourism and Hospitality industry has faced job loss around
38 million.
 In the 3rd week of March 2020 itself, the hotel sector saw a decay of over 65% in
occupancy level as compared to 2019.
 Indian Association of Tour Operators (IATO) estimate that the hotel, flight and
travel industry together may endure a loss about INR 85 billion remembering the
limitations forced on foreigner.
 Effect of Covid-19 would be felt on both the Higher and Lower level.
 India's outbound and inbound travel will observer an untouched low.
 The Restaurant Industry in India is anticipating very nearly zero income in the
prompt term, and a drop of half in the months to come.
 If the situation doesn't get improved, nearly 30% Hotel and hospitality industry
revenue will be affected.
 Once the lockdown is lifted there will be a job threat in the hotel and restaurant
industry nearly 15%, as they will not see an immediate surge in demand.
 Aviation industry in India may face losses worth INR 27,000 crore ($3.3-3.6 billion)
in the first quarter of 2020-21.
 The passenger growth of airlines is probably going to fall forcefully to a negative 20-
25% development for the 2020-21.

Recovery Plan

For the travel industry to recuperate, governments need to create a staged approach. In the beginning,
during the phases of the pandemic, the government presented a strict regulation, for example, severe
lockdowns, which made the travel industry practically inconceivable. As the level of new infection
decreases, governments commonly choose to loosen up certain limitations, moment of people within their
own states. International travel is banned due to Covid. During this stage, everyone is thinking that
domestic tourism will increase and jobs of all people are safe and secure.
Promoting Domestic Tourism is one of the important recovery plans. The Prime Minister said that there is
a need to be “Vocal for Local Tourism” during this pandemic, hoping the charm of the tourism industry
would bloom again after this Covid pandemic.
