This guide can be used for all DATACOM DM4000 Metro Ethernet Series. Provides the information about
installation and characteristics of DM4000 family.

This guide focus in network system administrator or someone responsible. It assumes that reader has a
knowledge about networking and communicating.

1.2. Overview
The DM4000 Metro Ethernet Series offers the best and most reliable solution for Fast, Gigabit and 10
Gigabit Ethernet. Supporting copper and fiber connections, DATACOM DM4000 switches can be used to
connect to clients, servers or access devices (hubs, routers, LAN switches or WAN access devices).

They provide multiple chassis options to connect and manage Non-blocking data between boards. Its
scalable platform design allows future growth and investment protection from the smallest to the largest
chassis option.

The DM4000 Series has several options of interface boards, compatible with all chassis sizes, and redun-
dant MPUs (Main Processor Units), compatible with 6U and 10U height chassis, following your network
growth and guaranteeing advanced reliability for your network.

For complete management, CLI, Web, SNMP and DmView tools are available. The DmView tool is a
Graphical User Interface that allows complete state and fail monitoring, configuration management and
inventory, perfect for higher Network sizes.

The DM4000 MPU384 contains three RJ-45 connectors on its front panel. One for Outband Management
a console port and a AUX console Port for future implementation.

The Management interface can be connected to a desktop throught a CAT 5 ethernet cable and the console
cable pinout to a standard DB9 connector can be found in the appendice A.

The pin-out of both console and outband management ports are shown in the next figure.

Chapter 13. Fan Board

13.1. Description
Fan’s are used to avoid a highly temperature that could be compromise Switch functioning.

Fan board can be replaced while the switch is active - hot swappable.

Warning

Don’t put objects near the fan board exit and control the environment temperature.

37
Chapter 14. Installation Guide

14.1. Installing the Switch in a Rack

The switch can be installed in a 19" rack. The brackets used to fix the device already come attached to the
switch. To install the switch in a rack, use the following procedure and refer to the figure below:

Figure 14-1. Rack Mounting

14.2. Powering the Switch

Warning

Remember to attach the ground to chassis before installing a suply source.

After installing the switch, plug one end of a IEC-320 standard power cable into the AC receptacle located
at the rear panel of the switch and the other end into the local power source outlet. The Power LED should
light, indicating the switch is correctly powered.

14.5. SFP Module

14.5.1. Connecting SFP Module

The use of a SFP transceiver is optional. It is not included in the package. Follow the next instructions to
install a SFP module properly:

Figure 14-5. Connecting a SFP module

40
Chapter 14. Installation Guide

1. Insert the SFP transceiver into one of the four switch module bays. There’s only one orientation that
the module can be plugged. The optical connector should face outward. The slot connector should
face down for the upper bays, and up for the lower bays.
2. Slide the module into the slot and press firmly to ensure it seats into place.

Note: Installing or removing a SFP module can be done without powering off the switch. SFP
transceivers are hot-swappable, but make sure there are no network optic cables connected to the
module before removing it!

The SFP modules that can be used with DmSwitch and each correspondent maximum cable lenght are
described in the table bellow:

Table 14-1. Gigabit SFP Modules

SFP Module Fiber Type Maximum Lenght

Warning

Signals over fiber optic cables are transmitted via lasers. Although the lasers are
compliant with the requirements of Class 1 Laser Products and are eye safe in
normal conditions, never look direclty at a transmit port when it’s turned on!

After this, attached the security locker according the figure below
