Project : Seaweed Cultivation in Nambung

Object : Seaweed farmers in Nambung

A. PRELIMINARY
Nambung is an area located east of SAMARA. Administratively it is part of the
Sekotong district, West Lombok Ragency, NTB Province. The majority of the Nambung
people’s occupations are palawija farmers and cattle breeders. However, these livelihoods
have not been able to significantly improve their economy. In fact, many people live in
poverty. The current condition of the Nambung community is in contrast to the 2000s. At
that time, Nambung was famous as the best seaweed producer in Lombok. However,
around 2014, when corn plants began to be widely cultivated, seaweed farmers began to
get a lot of problems. The use of pesticides on corn plants begins to pollute the sea, used
pesticide waste flows into the sea this has an impact on desreasing sea water quality
which causes seaweed to die and seaweed farmers lose their livelihoods.

The shift in the type of agriculture actually has an unfavorable trend for the
Nambung people, for the environment causes sea water pollution due to excessive use of
pesticides and for the community’s economy because the income from seaweed
cultivation is greater than corn cultivation. Income ratio is around 40:60.
When the trend of corn cultivation began to be abandoned by the people of
Nambung, seaweed farmers began to have new hope to rise again because the main
problem they faced was that the pollution of sea water by pesticides has no longer
occurred. However, seaweed farmers have a new problem, namely financial problems.
They find it difficult to restart seaweed cultivation because they do not have the money to
buy seeds and other materials.
In Nambung there are 7 groups of seaweed cultivation. Each people consists of 10
people. The number of Nambung people who work as seaweed farmers is 70 people.
