INTRODUCTION

RATIONALE

One of the higher education’s goals is to help students develop their

intellectual skills as well as their personal development. There are other sources in

addition to the traditional classroom setting that can help students in advancing their

interests and improving their abilities. Being involved in school organization is an

opportunity to show unique characteristics and talent in performing in activities or

events. It also helps the students augment their skills and capabilities in their chosen

field of competition. They are given activities to boost their self - confidence and

develop camaraderie among peers.

Not all times students spend their time in school for class discussions.

There are events and competitions held where students participate which results as

another learning experience for them. Participation in extracurricular activities are

positively related to the development of competence and interpersonal relationships

because this increases their potential for relationships by growing their sensitivity,

acceptance and by raising their self-confidence. They get to know people from

groups who have same interests with them. Being able to perform in front of the

crowd gives the chance of being known. Many students are less likely to express

themselves just because of having low self-esteem.

However, there are students who think that they are not capable of

showcasing their talents and characteristics. Many of them are less likely to express

themselves just because of having low self-esteem. This means that thinking low or

poorly of yourself affects your self-confidence. Because of this shyness, they tend to

feel uncomfortable which leads them to become speechless and this negatively

effects on student’s learning. They usually hesitate in trying something new

especially on joining school activities. They only prefer to watch than to participate.

When they encounter unfamiliar situations, they are not sure how to act and will

take longer to warm up with those things.

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

Ramos (2016) explained than teenagers with this, suffer from inability to

maximize their talents and skills, believing that they do not have what it takes to do

or perform tasks.

“Basic Education teaches us hard skills we need to acquire in studying”

(Santos, 2017). Other than that, it recognizes the value of student activities in the

development of moral and spiritual wellbeing of students. Also, it is written in

student handbook that students are encouraged to participate in any existing

organization and may also promote organization of new groups that would cater to

activities and interests.

Garcia (2016) indicated that social development involves a person’s ability

for mature interaction with other individuals or groups. Teenagers develop a strong

need to belong to a group as they experiment with new behaviors to find their

personal identity. In effect, they will reach their goal to be distinctive and

independent. The skill that you have may be hidden because some people around

you do not accept it or may be afraid to show it because you might be misjudged.

This situation is the reason why school administration approved organizations

functioning with different tasks.

According to Magalona (2016), forming a group or an alliance is an inevitable

reality in adolescent development. Their search for an identity, companionship,

prestige, affirmation, self-esteem and the like lead them in the formation or

submission to a specific group. Social relationships among adolescents are highly

motivating especially for those who want to belong and for those who seek for an

identity and recognition. It is enough to muster the strength and risk one’s own body

for more of psychological benefits. Social health is the ability to get along with the

significant others. Making and keeping friends, offering and getting help or

assistance when needed. The concept is directly related with one’s relationship with

other people.

It is not enough to conquer your limitations if you yearn for excellence.

Knowing your personal strengths and limitations can help you a lot in choosing and

making right decisions in any aspect of life. Focusing on your personal strengths

will give you the opportunity to produce something remarkable. Your personal

strength is what you do best and where your genuine talents are, concentrate on

using that strength to the fullest if you want to live a comfortable life. Your strength

is an advantage to get the most value for others (Magalona, 2016).

According to Serrano (2016), individual’s career intention is based on their

personal aptitudes, abilities, aspirations and goals, tempered by the realities of the

labor market and their personal circumstances. A major turning point in adolescents’

lives involves the career choice that they make while in senior high school.

Frequently, it is viewed by family and community as a mere start to workplace

readiness. However, this decision plays a major role in establishing youth in a career

path that opens as well as closes opportunities.

Sadsad (2016) stated that establishing relationships entails maintenance of

it as well. Doing acts that will be for the benefit of the relationship are inevitable.

Expectation as to the reciprocal relationship between two parties necessitates acts

that will ensure a high degree of people skills. Establishing people skills includes

different requirements like investing time, effort and some resources. Also, you need

to speak well of others, learn to listen, develop trust and maintain high self-esteem.

Individuals who have developed people skills can socialize and relate with others.

Healthy people skills mean having some intimate friends or confidante to whom one

can vent his or her emotions whether positive or negative. People skills mean being

able to perform well even with others who possess varied characteristics.

Interpersonal skills require ready acceptance of tasks at hand. They ‘comply before

complain. They find solutions to resolve problems and not delve on finding faults or

blaming others.

According to Medina (2015), “An organization is a collection of people

working together to achieve a common purpose. It is the means used by people to

Senior High School Department

School Organization: Tool for Enhancing Student’s Self-Confidence
MANUEL S. ENVERGA UNIVERSITY FOUNDATION CANDELARIA, INC.

achieve certain objectives”. The function of this is for students to enhance their

talents and abilities as members. If you like to listen to music and learn how to play

instrument, then that is a skill for musical clubs. If you can listen to people and put

their ideas together, that is a skill called synthesizing ideas which is a part of

journalism. If you are an individual who believes in the value of exploring our world

through the performing arts, then you can join Theater Arts Club.

Personal effectiveness means making use of all the personal resources-

talents skills, energy, time, to enable you to achieve life goals. Your knowledge of

yourself and how you manage yourself impacts directly on your personal

effectiveness. Being self-aware, making the most of your strengths, learning new

skills and techniques and behavioral flexibility are all keys to improve your personal

performance. Our personal effectiveness depends on our innate characteristics-

talent and experience accumulated in the process of personal development. Talents

first are needed to be identified and then developed to be used in a subject area.

Experience includes knowledge and skills that we acquire in the process of cognitive

and practical activities (DepEd Central Office, 2016).

Written on the article by Capuno, Mylene (2009) entitled “The Envergan

Meets”, there was this Envergan named Makiz who was crowned as Miss Enverga

cited that the organization who chose her, heled her to show her beauty she

possesses, and she knew the feeling in front of the crowd. That made her more

confident as her name was engraved as “Beauty and Brain”. Buisan, Marvin (2018)

wrote an article about a member of Rondalla named Joy Duno She stated that

Senior High School Department

School Organization: Tool for Enhancing Student’s Self-Confidence
MANUEL S. ENVERGA UNIVERSITY FOUNDATION CANDELARIA, INC.
Quezon, Philippines

Banduria led her dream come true. With her stringed instrument, she finally

harvested the fruit of her work after years of practice under EUC Rondalla as she

qualifies for different Musical Competitions. But before turning on this point, it was

not an easy drive; it was a long exhausting walk which tested her determination.

Playing Banduria enables her to showcase her talent in school programs and

activities.

“Confidence is seen in overall self-worth and efficacy. This means

achieving a level of self-esteem that translates to a realization and belief that one can

effectively deal with the demands of the various contexts in which he or she finds

herself or himself” (Carandang, 2016).

For the members of the organization:

The members should value their organization/s and should help to encourage the

non-participants and to promote their groups. They should know how to prioritize both-

studies and being a member.

For the Advisers,

The Advisers should also give attention to the policies and activities of an

organization to check if it is good for its members or not.

For the School:

They should give support for this kind of clubs because aside from traditional

classroom setting, students can also learn things from it. They should give locations or

places for different organizations for their practices.

For the future researchers:

The future researchers should conduct more deeper studies that will analyze

participants vs. non-participants, academic vs. non-academic student organizations, leaders

vs. members as a part of an organization, to know how to improve an organization.
