Comments
1. The beam is continuous braced, therefore Lb < Lp. Then, the nominal flexural of moment is
calculated according to the limit states of yielding (see AISC 360-10 eq.F2-1)
2. The calculation result of AISC (hand calculation), SAP2000 and STAADPRO is almost same.

1. The beam is braced at third points, and unbraced length condition in minor axis is like this Lp <
Lb < Lr. The nominal flexural of moment is calculated according to Lateral Torsional Buckling
(see AISC 360-10 eq.F2-2)
2. In continuous beam model with Cb = 1.0, the calculation result of AISC (hand calculation),
SAP2000 and STAADPRO is almost same.
3. In continuous beam model with Cb = program determined, the calculation result of STAADPRO
is greater than AISC and SAP2000, because STAADPRO can’t determine the value of Cb
accurately.

STAADPRO can’t determine bending moment at mid beam segment. Therefore, STAADPRO
used bending moment diagram all span of beam to calculate Cb and the result calculation of Cb
is 1.140. However, SAP2000 is capable to use bending diagram at mid beam segment and the
value of Cb is 1.015. This value is equal with AISC calculation (hand calculation).
4. In beam is divided into 3 segments model with Cb = program determined, the calculation results
are almost same, because STAADPRO used bending moment diagram at mid beam segment
and the value of Cb is 1.00. It can be concluded that STAADPRO determine the Cb according to
the real length of beam. The STAADPRO does not capable to determine the value of Cb
according to the definition of LY in parameter design.

SAP2000 and STAADPRO is almost same.
3. In continuous beam model with Cb = program determined, the calculation result of SAP2000 and
STAADPRO is smaller than AISC, because SAP2000 and STAADPRO does not capable to

STAADPRO used bending moment diagram all span of beam to calculate Cb, and its value is
1.140. Meanwhile, SAP2000 may be use bending diagram at around maximum bending
moment only, and its value is 1.032.
4. In beam is divided into 2 segments model with Cb = program determined, the calculation result
of AISC, SAP2000 and STAADPRO is almost same, because SAP2000 and STAADPRO use
bending moment diagram at end beam segment (a half of beam span) only. The calculation
value of Cb is 1.30.
5. SAP2000 does not capable to determine the value of Cb only for beam braced at mid beam in
continuous beam model. Meanwhile, STAADPRO does not capable to determine the value Cb
according to unbraced length with LY definition in parameter design. Therefore, STAADPRO set
the default value for Cb is 1.0 for safety design.
