The key takeaways are that nebulization therapy utilizes a nebulizer to deliver medications to the lungs via mist inhalation and is used to treat various respiratory conditions.

The purposes of nebulization therapy are to add moisture to oxygen delivery systems, hydrate thick mucus to prevent plugging, and administer various drugs to the airways.

Medications that can be administered via nebulizer include bronchodilators, mucolytics, anticholinergics, corticosteroids, and saline solution.

NEBULIZATION
THERAPY

Utilizes a nebulizer which transports the

medication to the lungs by means of mist
inhalation.
A nebulizer is a device that can convert a
drug from a solution into an aerosol form
by means of a compressor/ compressed
gas source

TWO TYPES OF NEBULIZER

Creates a mist of drug particles that
can be inhaled via a face mask or
mouthpiece soothing the inflamed
airways

Bronchodilators are the most

common nebulized drug but many
others can be nebulized including
steroids and antibiotics
INDICATION
Nebulization therapy is used to deliver medications along the
respiratory tract and is indicated to various respiratory problems
and diseases such as:
• Broncho-spasms
• Chest tightness
• Excessive and thick mucus secretions
• Respiratory congestions
• Pneumonia
Purposes:
1. to add moisture to oxygen delivery system
2. to hydrate thick mucus and prevent mucus plugging.
3. to administer various drugs to the airways
CONTRAINDICATIONS
In some cases, nebulization is restricted or avoided due to possible
untoward results or rather decreased effectiveness such as:

• Patients with unstable and increased blood pressure

• Individuals with cardiac irritability (may result to dysrhythmias)

• Persons with increased pulses

• Unconscious patients (inhalation may be done via mask but the

therapeutic effect may be significantly low)
COMPLICATIONS

Possible effects and reactions after nebulization therapy

are as follows:

• Palpitations
• Tremors
• Tachycardia
• Headache
• Nausea
• Broncho-spasms (too much ventilation may result or
exacerbate Broncho-spasms)
MEDICATIONS ADMINISTERED VIA NEBULIZER
1. Bronchodilators
( salbutamol, ventolin)
2. Mucolytics ( ambroxol)
3. Anticholinergics
( ipratropium bromide)
4. Corticosteroids (beclomethasone,
budesonide)
5. Saline solution (NSS)
How to make 1 liter normal saline solution?

Ingredients:
2 teaspoons table Procedure :
salt (Sodium 1. Boil water for ten minutes, let cool for one hour
Chloride) 2. Then , boil for another ten minutes before mixing
Measuring with salt.( Mix until salt is completely dissolved. )
Teaspoon 3. Label container
Clean jar or other
container with a lid Normal saline solution can be stored at room
temperature for three days in a closed container.
1000 mL (4 cups) of
warm tap water
NEBULIZATION THERAPY
Procedure:
1. Check the doctor’s order.
2. Explain the procedure to the patient.
3. Prepare all equipment and bring to
bedside.
4. Wash hands. Screen , as necessary.
5. Assist the patient to Fowler’s position
( or whichever he is comfortable with)
6. Remove the nebulizer cup from the
device and open it.

7. Open the nebule, pour the contents into

the cup.

8. Screw back the top portion of the

nebulizer cup and attach to the tubing
then to the nebulizer.
9. Turn on the nebulizer.
10.INSTRUCT PATIENT TO
INHALE SLOWLY
THROUGH THE MOUTH .

HOLD EACH BREATH FOR 5-

10SECONDS , OR AS LONG
AS POSSIBLE, BEFORE
EXHALING.
11. CONTINUE UNTIL ALL
MEDICATION IN THE
NEBULIZER CUP HAS BEEN
AEROLIZED 9 USUALLY ABOUT
15 MINUTES)

12. ONCE THE FINE MIST

DECREASES IN AMOUNT,
GENTLY FLICK THE SIDES

13. TURN OFF THE NEBULIZER

14. If desired , have the patient gargle after
using the nebulizer.

15. Put patient back to supine position.

16. Do after care of equipment . DO HAND

HYGIENE.

17. Check oxygen saturation, if desired.

17. DOCUMENT the procedure done,

patient’s reaction, if any.
1. NEBULIZATION SHOULD BE TAKEN 2-3 HOURS a.c.
2. PERFORM ORAL HYGIENE AFTER TREATMENT.
3. USE MOUTHWASH IF PERMITTED.
4. WASH THE KIT WITH CEAN WATER AND DETERGENT AND
AIR DRY TO PREVENT CLOGGING OF MEDICATIONS
