The people are the primary determinants in the development of a nation. Strong nation
needs healthy citizens who will propel the socio-economic stability and productivity, thus
contributing to the improvement of quality of life.
Health services then are very essential to keep members of the community in good
shape and become contributors to meet the emerging demands of the society for development.
Health care services are usually offered by healthcare providers who are trained professionals
that ensure physical and psychological fitness of every individual (Meeks, et al., 2011). This
implies that healthcare plans in the community, school or in the family be prepared and
communicated to ensure that all aspects of physical, psychological and emotional and social
well-being are being taken into consideration. The objectives of establishing the healthcare
plan are to appraise the health conditions of individuals through screening and examinations
cure and treat disorders; to prevent and control the spread of diseases; to provide safety,
emergency care, and first aid, and to ensure a follow-up program for individuals who have
undergone treatments.

Consumers receive health information, products, and services from various sources,
thus individuals may be prone to frauds.
There are three major characteristics of health quackery (Schaler & Carroll, undated).
First it is a big business. A huge amount of money is spent on fraudulent health products and
services. Second, it multiplies and spreads fast. Lastly, it thrives on individuals who are
diagnosed with illnesses that are known to be cured.

In our country, Republic Act No. 8423 or the Traditional Medicine Act of 1997
provisioned the creation of the Philippine Institution and Alternative Health Care (PITAHC),
which works closely with the Department of Health. PITAHC is also the law-making body
with regards to the effective use of traditional and alternative medicine.
These complementary and alternative health care modalities are often taken for granted
because some individuals believe that traditional medical care may not be enough to treat a
person who is ill. A complementary medicine is availed and integrated with traditional
medicine like herbal medicine which is the practice of the medicinal and therapeutic use of
plants while alternative medicine is offered in place of traditional medicine.
Directions/Instructions:
You will be provided with activities to help you understand the importance of
complementary and alternative health care modalities. By knowing these health care
modalities, you’ll know that you may use around your background in case of emergency or in

Consumer protection is the practice of safeguarding buyers of goods and services, and
the public, against unfair practices in the market place. Consumer protection measures are often
established by law. Such laws are intended to prevent businesses from engaging in fraud or
specified unfair practices in order to gain an advantage over competitors or to mislead
consumers.
Consumer protection is linked to the idea of consumer rights and to the formation of
consumer organizations which help consumers make better choices in the marketplace and
pursue complaints against businesses. Entities that promote consumer protection include
government organizations, self-regulating business organizations, and non-governmental
organizations that advocate for consumer protection laws and help to ensure their enforcement
